SNOW DAY !!!! YAAAY!!!! Well, Maybe Not!
As a child, when it snowed, I remember listening, heart pounding, ears glued to the radio, listening to KYW News Radio 1060, in Philadelphia, for that most desired announcement, "All Philadelphia public and parochial schools are closed today."
Those words would cause me and most of my schoolmates to become giddy, our parents barely able to get us dressed warmly as we rushed to be the first ones outside to play in the snow.
If we were lucky enough to have had more than a few inches of snowfall, we could build tunnels from house to house. If not, building that slightly misshapen snowman and the snowball fights were always great, as long as the snow wasn't that fine, powdery stuff you couldn't shape into anything!
Of course, we tried to stay outside as long as we could, or until near frozen fingers and toes forced us inside, for the ordered warming up and clothes drying process required by our moms.
Well, we got a snow day here in my township and I've not seen one kid outside playing. There are the budding enterpreneurs, shovels in hand, going door to door, trying to pick up a few dollars for clearing driveways.
No bundled up kids frolicking, laughing and playing in the snow; there never are any on the rare snow day around here.
No, today most kids are content to stay indoors, playing Wii, PSP, XBox and of course, getting unexpected time on their PCs and laptops or surfing the hundreds of channels available on cable television.
And then, there's also the lament, " Awww! This snow day is gonna add an extra day to the end of the school year!"
Too bad my former schoolmates aren't near by. I'd be tempted to scare up some snow day fun, so we could show these kids today what real fun is on a snow day!

Earlier this morning, the kids in my neighborhood were heading toward the park with their multi-color flyers, shovels, and buckets.
