Snus Tobacco on 60 Minutes: What is Snus? Is Snus Safe?
Snus Tobacco Was The Focus of a Story on 60 Minutes. What Is Snus? Where Can You Buy It? Does Snus Help You Quit Smoking Or Just Give You a Chance To Consume More Nicotine?
Viewers of 60 Minutes on Sunday got a mouthful of snus. The smokeless tobacco product has been popular for years in Europe and is gaining popularity in the US.
Swedish researcher claim that snus is much safer than cigarette smoking and chewing tobacco.
What is Snus?
Snus is finely ground tobacco that is placed in small packets. Unlike chaw, it doesn’t require spitting. Snus also contains fewer toxins than chewing tobacco.
Makers of snus insist that the product is far safer than cigarettes because there is no smoke. Ideally, snus can be used to wean people off of cigarettes.
The Downside of Snus
There is concern that instead of helping users quit smoking, it encourages them to use both snus and cigarettes. Makers of Snus have been criticized for selling the fact that you can use snus indoors while working or on transit, thereby giving users the chance to get a nicotine fix in non-smoking areas.
“Snus is a whole new category in the U.S.,” said Thomas Russo, a partner with Gardner Russo & Gardner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “In light of the limited venues for smoking, there is an opportunity to attract the people who use a variety of tobacco products.”
Where Do You Buy Snus?
Snus isn't necessarily available in the US, although that is changing. Sweden's Swedish Match AB hopes to expand the sale of snus to about 1,200 stores in the US possibly by year's end. Snus can also be purchased online on sites like BuySnus. and Swedish Snus.

Snus is a product I would simply like to try. I had to use smokeless tobacco when I was in the military, working around nuclear weapons areas, and smoking was simply prohibited, and with the location of the workareas we had to perform our duties, smokless tobhacco was a substitute for cigarettes, and for some it did seem to curb the nicotine craving, but it did require much spittin' and often times we carried a soda can with us for a spitoon. There was the risk of knocking such over when the can was half full and our spouses didnt like the idea either. What I found with smokless tobacco however, such was much more harmful than cigarettes, as it seemed to cause throat, gum, stomach cancers and many other illneses over a long period of use, and just to be spitting, such too, was not too attractive, and it was difficult to 'dip' even in the smokeless locations in public. If such a product as this with snus, does not require spitting, and comes in a variety of flavors, as I found smokeless tobacco tasted much better than cigarettes, then I am one who will give this a try as an alternative to smoking. Smokeless tobacco to me, did taste much much better than cigarettes, and such did seem to curb my craving for nicotine. I have lifted my cigarettes up to God, asking for strength to quit and with the amount of non smoking places becoming more numerous each and every day, this too, may be an alternative for me as well. Even now, with the new home I have, I have resided in such for about 4 years now, and to this day, I still do not smoke in it, I will go outside to have a cigarette, and if snus does not require spitting, this would be a blessing for me, if such does provide the nicotine fix I need to stop. I want to give this a try as an alternative to smoking cigarettes and see how such works.

Snus does not require spitting, and is harmless. You should switch to snus before you die of cancer or other diseases, which you WILL, if you smoke. Snus is the future man, don't you wanna be a part of it?

SNUS is available in the United States, at least in California. Camel & Marlboro make their own versions, both labelled as SNUS. I've used SNUS for the past year to supplement or replace my smoking habit. The nicotine dosage feels much higher than that of my usual Marlboro Lights, but it does not satisfy my desire to smoke or to escape my cube alone & unbothered for 7 minutes every few hours.

Jake: Are you in the Los Angeles area? Where do you purchase your Snus...I am a reporter interested in doing a story on smokeless tobacco products and would like to talk with you....

I have been using the electroni cigarette (myfuma.com) along with the snus. This combo has helped me not smoke for over 3 months. I'm 56 years old and have smoked since 1968. Even with my son-in-law recently deployed to Afganistan and my son in Bagdad, I still have not smoke using the e-cig and the snsu.

This is disgusting and misleading... the story also pointed out that there is MORE nicotine in snus than cigarettes and that it causes mouth cancer! Tobacco companies have been losing money since people are quitting with success. This is a make-up product and they are targeting your children.

There is NO proof of Snus causing mouth cancer.

Strange the are the ways of capitalism, with market driven economy, inflated demand generated by high tech advertising, hiring a lot of wheelers and dealers to promote a more harmful product to help quit what is less harmful.
Basic tenet of the religion of looters and plunderers, called crony capitalism,is:sell any thing, every thing, including war and destruction and sickness and death provided it brings in more and more profits.

I have been using Snus (the Swedish product) for about 2 years as it successfully converted me from a 15 yr. pack a day cigarette habit. I am comfortable with the risks especially in relation to cigarettes. It was actually easy to quit smoking for me with this product and I would recommend it for those wanting to fully quit smoking. I have not smoked since the day I received my first purchase of Swedish Snus. You need to be intent on quiting smoking. With the desire for4 quitting and this product you should have success. The US companies are only trying to save their companies from decreasing demand. I don't hold that against them. I will say that the US versions are not very good and I trust the Swedish makers to keep the product clean of chemicals more than I would the US ones. I think 60 minutes showed how the Swedes regulate the process well. I do think they used a bad example with the chain smoker who basically added Snus to his smoking habit. There a tons of people that have quit smoking with Snus. You only have to look at the stats in the Scandinavian countries to see that.

Why make conclusions and statements (such as Snus causing mouth cancer or is more dangerous than smoking? ) without researching the facts? There's absolutely no link btw mouth cancer and Snus. In the 80s a researched found found a very weak (statistically insignificant) link btw Snus and thyroid cancer. I started using Snus when I was 13 and quit at 35 but only because my wife thought it to be a bit too gross. Overall, it's a great product for anyone who would like to continue using nicotine. Be aware though, it does have more nicotine than cigarettes (nicotine does NOT cause cancer btw).

I started using snus (the real snus from Sweden) to quit smoking when I found out I was going to be a dad. I have proudly been smoke free for almost three years. I started smoking when I was 14 and I smoked at least a pack a day for 17 years. For anybody that truly wants to quit smoking I strongly advise to try snus. But get the real stuff from Sweden. There is any number of good, reliable websites to buy it from.

Both of my parents quit smoking due to snus. My mom - who'd been smoking a pack a day for 30 years - started using snus when she got pneumonia, for the only reason that she just couldn't smoke. When she healed, she never took up smoking again. For months she carried around an unopened cigarette pack in her handbag, just in case, but never got the urge to smoke again. Very few continue to smoke while starting using snus. As for the risks... The most prominent risk is yellow teeth.. Yes, something most long-time smokers already have. There are no reliable sources saying snus may cause mouth cancer. Yeah, may. That's what they say when there's no scientific proof. People saying snus causes cancer are lobbyists from A Non-Smoking Generation (an organization that really should be called The Anti All All Sorts of Tobacco Lobby Group).

Hello, I am from Sweden and know a LOT about snus. The program about Snus(Originally from Sweden) was VERY misleading: * Snus is healthier than smoking: Of course. ANYTHING is healthier than smoking! There are even studies telling that Weed is healthier than Smoking cigarretes! * No studies says that Snus is dangerous: And NO studies says that Snus is completely Safe. Sweden WANTS to sell their product all over the world so they won't tell All the truth. How many years did it take BEFORE the Unites States told the world that Smoking cigarrettes WAS dangerous?? * The Swedes smokes Less cigarrettes in the world: True. But this has NOTHING to do with snus. The Swedish government And organisations had been informing the Swedish people to stope smoking for Many years now. Anti-smoking campains in televsion and schools. Prohibition of advertise about tobaco/cigarrettes in ANY media. In Sweden you are NOT allowed to smoke in public areas like restautants or Night Clubs! * Swedish Doctors Recommend people to use Snus to stop smoking?! hahahaha PLEASE, tell me the name of ANY Swedish doctor that says so. Then he will NOT be a doctor in Sweden No more. I have Always loved 60 minutes for its seriosity and rightfulness... The Tobacco industri are celebrating all over the world again! Thanks 60 Minutes!

I loved the 60 minutes story on snus. Here in Norway, as in Sweden, it is quite popular, at least with people under 40. At my university hardly anyone smokes, but you'll have to look hard if you want to find someone who has not yet tried snus, even among girls. Snus is a relaxing and enjoyable product. When you brake it down it's all about freedom of choice, and to Americans that should be appealing. If you don't like the product, don't try it, but please don't try stop others from doing the same, let people make their own choices. Long live Liberty!

I am also Swedish and must say that I agree with 60 minutes. Dont think doctors recommend snus, it would surprise me. But I know many people who have smoked but started using snus instead, would even say that it is more common than you think. I smoked before, and had some health problems, poor health, coughing, etc. I've been with out cigarettes for years, thanks largely to snus. Snus is not good but much better than smoking, is not aware of health problems that I did with smoking in all cases. Can be a bit sore in the gum, sometimes, the only problem I personally know of. However, it is said that snus is more addictive than smoking. However, we do not have lung cancer.

I live in Uniontown PA and I am in love with camel snus frost flavored. I used to rub skoal long cut and my girlfriend couldn't stand it and when i made the transition to snus, she said that it smelled like a peppermint gum and she doesn't get mad at me anymore haha. It is hard to find the frost flavor around town, everybody usually carries the mellow but a few places like sheetz have the frost.

I love Snus, and actually quit smoking thanks to Snus. Since quitting smoking and using Snus full time, I feel much better than I did when I was smoking. Here is my experience switching from smoking to Snus if anyone is interested in seeing what to expect when you switch from smoking to Snus: snusauthority.com/blog/snus-experiences/switching-from-smoking-to-snus-my-experience/

I quit smoking nearly a year ago thanks to snus. As with most people, i started out using the Camel snus, but after doing some research online i am now a proud snuser of real Swedish snus. I have to admit that i have quite the sweet tooth and actually liked the taste of Camel snus, however the nicotine level wasn't enough to curb my cravings. After a couple of weeks and switching to Swedish snus (mostly sterks or ekstra sterks) i no longer have that problem. Now the only issue I have to deal with is this stinking PACT act.

I started snusing when I was 15 years old, I live in Norway.I've done snus ever since, and I have no plans to quit, because it is harmless. It is scientifically proven that it does not cause cancer or other diseases, and it's harm has been compared to coffee by large amounts of scientists. Also, in my opinion it feels much better than cigarettes. I've smoked some cigarettes in my life, but smoking just doesn't cut it.Snus is something you can use anywhere, everywhere. You will be able to use it as much as you like, anywhere, so you will never suffer from abstinence.Snus is also harmless, and cigarettes are said to be more harmful than many narcotic substances. Snus contains alot more nicotine than cigarettes. It tastes good, but doesn't give you bad breath, and if you don't like the tobacco taste you can get snus with various flavours (which is sort of feminine). The nicotine effect lasts for 20-30 minutes depending on the strength, when a cigarettes effect is gone about 30 seconds after your last inhale.Snus is cheaper than cigarettes, and you can choose from loose snus and portion snus.Loose snus is snus you bake in your hand and often takes some time to bake, but feels really good. A portion snus takes about 5 seconds to put in.Why don't they make snus sale legal in Europe? I think the people of the world deserve to have a safe alternative to smoking.Snus is the new cigarette, snus is the future.

Active military here, too (almost 22 years now, yikes)… and a recent convert to Swedish snus. Losing my mother and several co-workers from cigarettes should have been enough evidence for me, but it wasn’t. It really gets tedious pretending your hairless co-workers’ chemo stories won’t apply to you someday. Tried to quit using everything: patches, gum, lozenges, Wellbutrin and cold turkey. All failed. After the 60 Minutes piece, I tried Camel Snus but like everybody complains… it’s just tides you over. Tried the Swedish brand “General” like I saw the nic addict use in the show, which I bought at a fancy cigar shop. Oh MY… “Sweet mystery of life, at last I’ve found yoooooooo…!” Ahem. Sorry. Anyway, my goal was to be off cigs in 4 months with a combination of snus and smoking. I was EASILY done in two months. 4 weeks ago I quit having my morning cigarette. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks without any cigarettes, period! Sorry, tk kiddo… compared to everything else, capitalism is AWESOME… and this product delivers exactly as advertised! Move to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Zimbabwe THEN lecture me about capitalism. And I’ve read all the health studies… even the anti-snus sites that have trouble coming up with any actual data. While it’s not risk elimination… the risks are border on statistically insignificant. For you current smokers… I almost get misty-eyed to say this… you don’t REALIZE what you’re missing with those cancer-sticks! The other day I could smell flowers from ACROSS the street… a glass of milk tasted so good, I guzzed the whole carton down! I’ve always loved to cook… but now I realize I was over-seasoning everything. Also… smokers? I can smell YOU too, I hate to say. I will always stand up for smoker’s rights, but… um, could you go stand over THERE when I defend you? Thanks.

I found out about Snus not too long ago, and I love it. Everything I have read also points to Snus being very safe compared to cigarette smoking. For anyone interested in getting started with Snus, I recommend checking out this info page, it was pretty informative and answered a lot of my questions about Snus: snusauthority.com/blog/about-snus/
