Farewell to Socks

Socks the cat, the former White House cat of the Clinton's was put to sleep today after months battling cancer. He was 20 years old and had been losing weight for quite some time due to his illness. He had mouth and jaw cancer.

Since 2001, Socks lived with Betty Currie, former President Bill Clinton's secretary.

He had been a stray and was adopted by Chelsea Clinton, the Clintons' daughter, when Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas.

"Socks brought much happiness to Chelsea and us over the years, and enjoyment to kids and cat lovers everywhere," Bill and Hillary Clinton said in a joint statement released by the William J. Clinton Foundation. "We're grateful for those memories, and we especially want to thank our good friend, Betty Currie, for taking such loving care of Socks for so many years."

Socks had an online fan club while he lived in the White House.

Well, if cats do go to heaven, I just hope he has an ample supply of sparrows, mice and other delicacies up there instead of kit-e-kat....

The video is great!

It's good to know that he was taken care of into his old age.  It is so hard to part with a beloved pet.

So sad. My big dog is getting old and I fear this is his last year. He pees when he sleeps sometimes and can't get up very well. I love my big dog and had him since he was a pup. I'm going to miss him and I know the day is getting closer.

20 years is very old for a cat.  My cat Coal was 19 when he also had the same cancer.  In cats any cancer above the neck is fatal.

This is not easy to experience.  One of the most dreadful times of my life was when Coal was in his last days.

R.I.P. Socks.
