Soldier says rabbis pushed "religious war" in Gaza

This soldier is amazing and very brave to share his experiences with the world on what happened while he was fighting in the Ghaza conflict.

The Rabbis in this story remind me of some of the Buddhist monks here in Sri Lanka (past and present) including some of the JHU monks who hold onto the belief that Sri Lanka should only be for the Buddhists, and the Sri Lankan Christians, Hindus and Muslims should leave.

I wonder if there will be a soldier from the Sri lankan military who would be brave enough to share his experiences of what is happenning in the war that is raging here in Sri Lanka and giving the real facts of the genocide committed on the Sri Lanka Tamils in the war zone.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Rabbis in the Israeli army told battlefield troops in January's Gaza offensive they were fighting a "religious war" against gentiles, according to one army commander's account published Friday.

"Their message was very clear: we are the Jewish people, we came to this land by a miracle, God brought us back to this land and now we need to fight to expel the gentiles who are interfering with our conquest of this holy land," he said.

The account by Ram, a pseudonym to shield the soldier's identity, was published by the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper in the second day of revelations that have rocked the Israeli military. (www.haaretz.com "Shooting and Crying, 2009").

This soldier is of my genre. Lover of truth and justice. Whom their own kith and kin would call traitor.

Such people like this soldier are rare in this world. But I wonder if any of Hamas's fighters would have spoken about the atrocities that were committed on the people of Israel, the Palestinian Christians and the Palestinian Muslims by Hamas. I have yet to come across any such news. I guess there is no one yet in Hamas who is a "lover of truth and justice." Maybe someday there will be though.

You did not come across any because simply there is none.  Israeli atrocities and crimes are part of its existance.  This soldier's testimoney is only wake up call. Is it too little too late?

Amen to that...

lets not loose focus guys.. what ever God we belive in I am sure HE wont be happy with the deaths of His belivers and non- belivers.

the human cost of conflict is very high and unjustifiable. if it is wrong on one side then it cant be justified on the other side.

You're absolutely right Amaad, in any conflict, both sides are to blame when the lives of human beings are lost.

The war between Ghaza and Israel remind me alot of the war that is prevailing here in my country between the LTTE and the Sri lanka government because of the overwhelming amount of human beings killed. But the difference is that I don't recall Israel ever bribing Hamas and paying them money whereas the Sri lankan government did bribe the LTTE a few years back. My guess is that the LTTE used that money they received from the Sri lanka government to buy weapons.

To be specific, it was not exactly few years ago, it was President Premadasa's Govt (in the eighties) which bribed the LTTE, but I believe the Govt did that with good intentions to end the war. But of course it backfired. It was a stupid move.

Exactly what would be those good intentions Hiranya? The only good intentions President Premadasa had was to develop the country but under his rule there were many human rights violations. I agree totally that it was a stupid move but most of the moves made by the past and present governments have been stupid and even inhumane. If you read the story I posted "Basil lied, Selvan cried" you will see that the Rajapakse regime did bribe the LTTE.

It seems that my highlighting tool does not work when I want to include an excerpt/excerpts when I'm replying to a comment. So what I'll do is, I'll post a separate story on the human rights violations committed by the past and present Sri lankan governments. You will then get the evidence you want.

"......Sri lankan government did bribe the LTTE a few years back"

Interesting. LTTE took bribe that "few years back" and liked it?

Then they might be liking the bribe they are getting now ,more - imho.

Agent, it wasn't 'few' years ago...  it's more like 20 or so years ago.

Unfortunately it is a religious war, just ask Hamas, and the people of Gaza and the West Bank.

You're right, it is a religious war.

The war raging here in Sri lanka came to be because of religion too. You can read more about it at the following link. I used the highlighting tool to include an excerpt of the story but it didn't work. I'm copying and pasting an excerpt of the story with the link. Hope the link to the story works though. Here it is:

"The myth of 'Lion ancestry' & adults-only tales of the Lala land."

Over the years, Sinhala Buddhist nationalistic politicians and closely linked Buddhist clergy have been successful in implanting the belief that the Sinhala Buddhists are the ‘chosen people’ and the real custodians of Sri Lanka and of Theravada Buddhism. This, many Sinhala Buddhists believe, is their ‘birth right’ by virtue of the origin of their ethnicity as depicted by the Mahavamsa. According to many Sinhala speaking Buddhists, their birthright to the ‘custodianship’ of the island and Buddhism is sacred and unquestionably legitimised for eternity by the Mahavamsa.

Any discussion based on facts against the Sinhala Buddhist birthrights argument is often condemned as an anti-Sinhala Buddhist conspiracy or Tamil terrorist propaganda. It is often the one who raises the questions who becomes the target of wrath and condemnation, sometimes leading to dangerous consequences.
