Someone Always Has It Worse
Although I have been “pissing and moaning” at lot lately about my situation in life, I realize that I have it better than most. With the mortgage being our only debt, my husband and I have been able to get by on unemployment, contract work and savings.
I received a call from my husband today who was near tears. He had noticed an older man eating coffee grounds from a trash can for his breakfast in downtown Nashville. John took the man to a local deli and bought him breakfast. The man’s name was Bob. He shook hands with John and thanked him. John said that Bob was not an addict; he was just homeless.
This was a wake up call for us, as we both have been depressed about our situation lately.
I realize that most of us in this country can help someone else by a simple act of kindness. I sometimes get upset at the amount of money spent on political campaigns in this country. If both sides of the healthcare issue just spent the money that has been spent on advertising and promotion of their causes, we probably could have given folks such as Bob needed food or needed healthcare.
Because of my unemployment, I have not written checks to associations and organizations this year. I have donated time. I have always volunteered in the community, but I see a more urgent need this year. And I have had plenty of time.
Plus gentlemen like Bob give me so much in return. I appreciate all that I have been blessed with in my life.

Sometimes we get wrapped up in our dilemmas, and do not think about others having a worse time. Thank you for reminding us. Putting ourselves in someone else's place makes us better.

This is a nice piece and allows us all to reflect on our situation in life I think. Thank you for sharing this.

It's a good piece about personal reflection insofar as you and your husband are clearly better off than the homeless gentleman. I think when people are down, it's understandable for them to focus on their situations, forgetting that there are countless other people who are experiencing worse circumstances.

That's the spirit of America Barbara! Like you and millions of other Americans, I often "piss and moan". But then reality sets in. If anything good has come out of this recession bordering on depression, it's that many have learned the meaning of the phrase, "There but for the grace of God go I." God Bless!

Very inspirational. At times when it seems like it is finally going to go beyond the breaking point, it is important to keep things like this in mind. Acts like this show the true spirit of human nature that is often suppressed due to the stressors of daily life.
