Sonia Sotomayor Confirmed as First Latina Supreme Court Justice
The U.S. Senate has been confirmed by Sonia Sotomayor as by a 68-31 vote. Sotomayor will become the first Latina Supreme Court Justice.
The vote tended to fall along party lines, with the vast majority of Democrats approving of Sotomayor and the vast majority of Republicans voting against her nomination.
Sotomayor appears to share similar views as Justice David Souter, the Justice she is replacing. The confirmation means that the choice of Sotomayor will not seriously alter the Supreme Court's ideological split.

Congratulations to Sonia Sotomayor. She is making history at the first Hispanic woman on the Supreme Court.

It is not surprising that Judge Sotomayor is confirmed along party line, not unlike the votes to confirm Chief Justice Roberts.
