Swearing in Justice Sonia Sotomayor At U_S_ Supreme Court

Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in this morning as the 111th US Supreme Court Justice by Chief Justice John Roberts.

Sotomayor is the first hispanic person to be confirmed for the position, and took the oath of office two days after winning Senate confirmation.

Sotomayor, who is 55 and has been a federal judge for 17 years, was confirmed on Thursday after intense conservative opposition. She is the first Supreme Court Justice to be sworn in under a Democrat since 1994.

Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as associate justice of the United States Supreme Court this morning, becoming the first Hispanic member of the high court.
At just past 11 a.m., Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. administered a pair of oaths to her in two private ceremonies at the Supreme Court building, completing her ascent to a life-tenured position as the nation’s 111th justice, and the first to be nominated by a Democratic president since 1994.
