A Package Exploded Inside the FedEx Building in Sorrento Mesa April 14

Thankfully no one was hurt when a package exploded inside the FedEx building in Sorrento Mesa on Wednesday April 14. The FedEx sorting plant is located in a strip mall in the Sorrento Valley neighborhood.

The explosion happened early in the morning as the building was evacuated just after 6am according to NBC San Diego. A bomb squad was called in just to make sure but it is expected to give the building the 'all clear' later today.

When news of a package exploding that is in the mail system or is being transported to someone, one automatically thinks that there is a sinister story behind it; thankfully in this case nothing suspicious is suspected.

The package exploded due to lithium batteries coming in to contact with each other as stated by San Diego police Captain Jim Collins. The Associated Press is reporting that the package contained wires and batteries. No suspicious activity is expected at this time.

The package had just been handled by a female employee at the sorting plant, but she had just sent it down a chute to the next sorting area when it exploded. She was only about six feet away but she was not harmed; just a little shaken up.

Collins said the FedEx facility should reopen for business later today.

It is not thought the explosion was deliberate and there have been no threats reported on the building.
