CHICAGO — To the list of people having trouble finding somewhere in Washington to stay in early January, there can now be added one more entry: the Obama family.

President Bush’s aides have turned down a request from President-elect Barack Obama to move from Chicago into Blair House, the official guest residence across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, in time for Mr. Obama’s daughters to start school in Washington on Jan. 5.

This is ridiculous. Apparently George Bush is leaving two children left behind (to start the school year). Thanks, Good King George.

Of course they'll want to start the school year right after the Christmas break.  Wonder where they'll be staying ...

Since when does the School Year starts in January, would that not be September in the US.

Did you research the Protocol for the Official Guest Residence? If the White is following protocol then there are actually doing what is suppose to be done, further is the Guest House being used for official function and dignitaries? I am certainly no fan of GW Bush however this story is not clear what the reasons are and if those are justified. Obama does make enough money to afford a comfortable Hotel for his family unlike many others that are truly homeless.

I guess the girls are finishing off their school year or something. School starts in August in the U.S. ,but the girls obviously need to finish off the year they're in before summer.

Hah--Education is not a priority for the bushs as usual.

Also-This is the president elect for issues of security they should be able to reside there.

Did any other President ever move in early??

I know if one of my percs was a house at my job, I sure wouldn't move out before I had to.

Come on.

They surely can afford a hotel for a couple of weeks.

A hotel is not as secure as the white house grounds would be. Granted no land is secure where the bush family resides because they're trecherous and completely incompetant at anything but sociopathically using the office of precidency for anything but personal gain.

Blair House, which dates to 1824, has served as the official presidential guest house since 1942 for heads of state and other foreign dignitaries. Appearing deceptively small from Pennsylvania Avenue, Blair House is actually a complex of four joined townhouses that is larger than the White House, with 119 rooms and 70,000 square feet of space.

"There are 14 guest bedrooms, eight staff bedrooms, 35 bathrooms, four dining rooms, kitchen facilities, laundry and dry cleaning facilities, an exercise room, a flower shop, and a fully equipped hair salon," according to the Blair House Web site. "Blair House strives to be comfortable, discreet and secure, and to provide any service that a visiting dignitary might require."

Good information.

That is so nauseating. They should be chastized by the media for this. On one hand I almost don't want to know about it, because its so embarassing, but it'd also be nice if someone could reverse it. They passed it off to aides so nobody could be blamed for it.

Rent a freekin apartment.  Why should rules and tradition be changed just for the Obama's?

Well, he promised change...he just didn't tell you what would be changing hahaha

Eastvanray, You are an idiot. You talk like, as everybody knows, “ a stupid republican”.  I am a conservative but not a stupid republican.

You should have checked to see how much it is costing the government (the secret service) to protect the incoming president and how much it will cost to protect an ex-president of Australia.  Few thousand dollars for the ex-president of Australia, but tens of millions of dollars for the incoming president.

The Blair house is already been protected by the Secret Service and it will be easier to have the incoming president stay there.

Read my profile (and the code of conduct).  I am niether a Repiblican, conservative nor even American.  The relative costs are related to the fact that almost no one wants to kill th ex-Pres of Australia while millions want any US President dead.
