The breakaway group from the ANC has founded a new party called the South African Democratic Congress (SADC) after months of battling between the pro-Zuma majority of the ANC and the minority oppposition under leadership of Mosiuoa Lekota, the former defence minister and ANC chairman. Earlier last week Jordan reported that the ANC refuses to 'legitimise' dissident faction. But now the dissident faction opted to create a legitimite party opposing the ANC in the next elections.

Originally the new party choose the name South African National Congress (beware, link towards Dutch newspaper), however a judge ruled that this sounded too much familiair to ANC.

The SADC will contest the ANC in the forthcoming elections in 2009. However the ANC does not fear the competition or losing it's absolute majority, although more than 7.000 ANC members left the party to join the ranks of the newly founded party.

"We want to become the next government in the provinces and at the national level. We want to be in the majority," Mr Shilowa told reporters.

I am happy that finaly we have started something that will not remind people about Robben Island why all leaders of ANC keep reminding people about this. They were there for people and country but we were also supporting their strunggle. I fully support the new party and I will join and be part of leading structures. I am working for the community we have lots of projects to empower women and youth but those people including me still lives not changed because we have made lots of funding proposals up to so far gorvnment does not want to help. I think the new party is going to fucus to poor people and empower those people.
