Southern Brazil Catastrophe.
Fristly, I'd like to say that what happened in the past few days cannot be translated into words. It rained like never before, it hit our town like no other rain ever did. And it destroyed like no other natural effect could ever have done. Neither a photo nor a video can show the gigantic loss caused to the city.
The massive rain that catastrophically hit our city and the surrounding cities was the strongest since 1983, according to people who lived in '83, however the damages caused this time were a way bigger. It seemed ceaseless, in its hardest moment the river level was increasing 50 centimeters per hour, almost reaching downtown. Although the city center hadn't been fully emerged by the flood as on-off areas it had its damages as well due the storm and mudslides. It was unbelievable, still is.
Devasted streets are shown on TV from time to time, as increasing numbers of people who have lost their homes as well as increasing numbers of missing people and deaths. But none television report will ever make justice to the pain suffered by those who have lost everything. And now, once again will have to struggle to conquest it all over again. To restart. Even though all these things can be bought again, their lost won't be easily accepted. Things that one day were happily bought, built or carefully maintened, projects that took a life to accomplish suddenly were taken away by the unpredictable, overnight. I'd say these were the lucky ones.
Unfortunately, there are people who have lost more than just goods or had their houses filled with mud, people whose house once reconstruted will never be the same because some part of the family's gone. Devasted neighbourhoods which once rebuilt will never be able to share of the same joy that someday had because some neighbour passed away. An endless immeasurable pain will stay along with those who remained. Such a painful feeling that no money amount will ever be enough to replace. It's priceless, unforgettable. A tragedy like this has no good side, every one is affected in some way or another. For those whose lives depended on somebody's else life now gone, stay strong.
The world has turned its eyes upon us, donations are coming through, support is being given by volunteers throughout the city, the army is out there, the mud will go away. Things will get better. It's on us not let this past event to weaken our lives and the lives of those surround. It's on us to strengthen someone's life who's in need. Our life depends on the lives of those around us and none effort will ever be unappreciated by someone whose life was suddenly turned upsidedown. What ought to be done, to help out our fellow citizen, our neighbour, our relative, whoever, must be done. Be a countryman. Someday it will come around. Time will do his job too. Those mentioned above shall remember that life nevertheless goes on.
And that God bless our land and its people.
