"In the first quarter of 2016, we'll prep and de-orbit the spacecraft," says NASA's space station program manager, Michael T. Suffredini.

That's a polite way of saying that NASA will make the space station fall back into the atmosphere, where it will turn into a fireball and then crash into the Pacific Ocean. It'll be a controlled reentry, to ensure that it doesn't take out a major city. But it'll be destroyed as surely as a Lego palace obliterated by the sweeping arm of a suddenly bored kid.

The international space station

will be completed in 2010.To

crash it into the Pacific Ocean

6 years later is silly. The United

States and trhe other nations need

to plan and fund it for 20 more

years to give time to decide whether

to keep it up permanently. I does cost

a lot of money but it is important and

the costs can be shared by several

nations.

I agree.  Strange thinking.

This could be due to a more modern replacement that is easier maintained and better in it lego type quality concerning docking and adding units? .

It could be but it would take ten years to get another station operational.

It's part of the cash-for-rusty-spacecraft program ... Big govn't says that all of that space rain has turned it into a rusting pile of junk ...
