Spain frees Eta killer

Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos, also known as the ETA Killer was released from prison on August 2, 2008. De Juan Chaos was originally sentenced to 3000 years in prison on charges of terrorism and murder for his killings of 25 people in 1987. He was sentenced to 3000 years becuase the Spanish system does have a life sentence De Juan Chaos was a member of a group known as Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or ETA. According to officials and ETA members, the group has killed 823 people since 1968. The group is known as a terrorist group but the Spanish and French governments, along with the European Union and the United States. The basic goals of the group are to achieve sovereignty and independence for the Basque County. The Basque Country is a region of the Western Pyrnees that runs between the borders of France and Spain and down to the Bay of Biscay.

A Basque separatist convicted of killing 25 people has been freed from jail in Spain after serving 21 years.

The release of Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos has sparked outrage in Spain.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero spoke of his "contempt" for the former Eta militant, but said his government had to respect the law.

De Juana Chaos was sentenced to more than 3,000 years in 1987, but under the penal code then in force, the maximum term he could serve was 30 years.

He qualified for early release in 2004 but was given a further term for threatening behaviour.

De Juana Chaos took part in a string of Eta attacks, including one of the group's deadliest - a Madrid car-bombing in 1986 which killed 12 members of the Guardia Civil police force.

In recent years he carried out several hunger strikes to protest against his treatment by the authorities.

Mr Zapatero said De Juana Chaos "generates a perfectly understandable feeling of contempt" among all citizens "and of course the head of the government".

"But we must respect the law," the prime minister added.

The group has killed more than 800 people in its four-decade campaign to set up an independent state straddling northern Spain and south-western France.

The release of De Juana Chaos came 40 years to the day after Eta carried out its first targeted killing.

Im not sure i like how the PM's train of thought is heading. Mr Zapatero, is law more important or justice? :)

If he were to answer Justice and react in such a way that disregarded law for justice, wouldn't that make him a vigilante? Unfortunately, he is right. Regardless of the holes in the system, you still have to follow it.

hmm..what's wrong in being vigilant? following a loophole is exactly the reason why we hav ppl like canadian-lim beheading in public! for lack of a better comparison,my cousin has a vicious guarddog rottweiler but doesn't mean he lets it out when there's guests around.

Oh I am not saying that I don't think one should pursue justice over law, because they are two completely different concepts in my opinion. I think that there is a very fine line between people who act out from illness and people that are just evil. Two different topics I know, but that's what my line of thinking was. Anyway, I guess that I am saying that the laws are here to protect us, though in some cases, such as this, it can provide to much protection to the wrong people. Though if someone were sick mentally, then the laws will help them get treated rather than killed by a vigilante. Does that make any sense?

haha..if that's the case then I prefer your train of thoughts better though...
