Spielberg grant for Jewish museum

A foundation created by director Steven Spielberg has given $1m (£504,377) to the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

The money from the Righteous Persons Foundation, founded in 1994, will help create a five-storey museum building in the city.

Spielberg used his share of the profits from Oscar-winning film Schindler's List to establish the organisation.

The new museum is set to open in 2010 on Philadelphia's Independence Mall.

The 100,000 square-foot facility will feature five floors of interactive exhibition space as well as "one of the nation's largest collections of Jewish Americana".

The museum has so far raised $111m (£55.9m) of the $150m (£75.6m) needed for the new building.
