The Sri Lankan Government has granted permission for a Private Medical Faculty at Malambe, that grants MBBS degree for a price of Rs. 6000000.00. This step is another step by the government to increase the alarming inequality in the education system in the Country.
The ISSE(International Students for Social Equality) of Sri Lanka has called for students as follows:
"Students must unify their struggles with the working class to defend free education and demand decent facilities. Above all, this means turning to an international socialist program based on abolishing the capitalist system and reorganising society to meet the social needs of all rather than the profits of a wealthy few. This is the perspective advanced only by the WSWS and ISSE.

Sri Lanka Government was further attacking the free education system in Sri Lanka by granting permission to institute another private university at Narahenpita, the Colombo Sub Campus of the St. Theresa Medical University in association with the OASIS Private Hospital Colombo and the Institute of Technological Studies.
This step of the government to grant permission to another Private Medical Faculty at Malambe shows the Government's outright policy to build up a private higher education system which deprives majority of the right to quality, free education, only because they cannot afford it.
Sisuhanda call for the Government to withdraw these decisions which destroy the Equality in the Education system and which is in breach of the Directive Principles of State Policy of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the Supreme law.
Who has Rs.6000000 to have a degree? Do you know all about poverty in Sri Lanka? Why these people who couldnt get three passes have to go abroad to get an education? because the Sri Lankan government cannot fund free education. Do those private universities give priority to those who have the next higher z score in the A/L exam? Millions of students in SrI Lanka are poverty striken. They somehow pass competitive exams and enter into Universities becuse of the existing so called decaying free education. We call not for those minority who can afford Rs. 6000000 to go to a private University, but to those thousands and millions of youth, students and sons and daughters of the working people to get together to fight this very profit system, which needs a internationalist socialist programme.
Education is not a commodity, nor a privilege!

Please refer our site. We are based in Sri Lanka and are politically active here.
Please note that we don’t want such things happen in Sri Lanka as in USA. We never want anybody to accept missing a chance of being educated at a ‘prestigious university’ because they cannot afford it. That is why we are doing politics and we bring our message worldwide.
We are socialist political solidarity with the international students. We reject all reformism, even though we fight for the same in winning transitional rights, and our struggle is only for International Socialism which is the only alternative to the world going to the doom under capitalism.
Also refer www.jceps.com & www.wsws.org and we invite you to study our perspectives even though you may not represent the interests of the class of people we are interested in.

In Sri Lanka, education is virtually free. With the brain drain, Sri Lanka has to have other avenues to educate people to be professionals. How many Government Educational institutes are there in the USA? My guess is none. Even if there are such institutions, they are not free. Why then are these disgruntled people not shouting about the hundreds and hundreds of kids from Sri Lanka going abroad with minimum qualifications, graduating and then coming back?Personally, I think the Government should do this and make some more room to have private universities, over and above the universities of Sri Lanka, where I also graduated 'Pina' (free), without paying for tition etc. I also suggest that at least a facilities fee should be charged from the undergraduates of Universities of Sri Lanka.

First of all,
Any reason why the Sri Lanka Government has to give free education?
I assume you are a graduate. - How much did you pay for your education?
So, you are not worried about students attending private universities. Only, the profit making by such institutions?
This also means we should stop all students who get three passes from going abroad?
All those who could afford Rs.6m should distribute their money to the poor so that they could use that money wisely?
You should write a paper to improve the so called decaying free education. If you do so, I am sure the authorities will see how your ideas could be implemented.
On the same token, you might next say that those without 3 passes cannot go in in luxury cars, (Mercedes, BMW, Intercooler etc). Only Motor cycles, bicycles or by bus.
I go to work by bus sometimes and also own a small car. I, sometimes envy those who go in bigger and better vehicles but I know my limits.
A person called Rohana Wijeweera, the founder of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and also the initiator of two vicious insurgencies alsosaid things very similar to what you are saying now. As somebody said, VIMUKTHIYA (Liberation). What happened in the end? We, as Sri Lankans suffered and many lives were lost in vain.
Can you give an example of the International Socialist programme you are referring to?

This article with inconsistent numbers, exageration, and anti GoSL statements, sounds very familiar. It's like someone is not keen about paid education being unaffordable to some students but really wants to provoke students to revolt, adding on unnecessary problems to the country. Education is not a cat's-paw.
at 04:28 on September 7th, 2009
The exact amount is 6 million. Without going into trivialities, we challenge you all pro-privatization of education to answer our questions intellectually with empathy. For more details visit to our site at www.sisuhanda.co.nr

There is no challenge. This looks like a good answer to arrest the brain drain. I understand the situation of the students who get the necessary qualifications and cannot get in to Universities.
What are you looking at?
More Universities for Free Education?
Raising the Z level?
Stopping private education?
In the USA, when a Grade 12 student applies to join a University, depending on the results, SAT scores and other criteria, they are accepted to join universities of their choice. Most students apply to 4 or 5 universities. There are children with very good grades who are accepted to Harvard or Yale but cannot go there because they cannot afford it. Therefore, they go to a university they can afford to go to, thus missing a chance of being educated at a prestigious university. They accept it. (No free education).
But, I am yet to hear about an organization called SisuhandaUSA. Perhaps, they are not socialist enough!!??
at 09:19 on September 9th, 2009
I do not see why Sisuhanda boys need universities. It looks they know it all.
at 05:49 on September 10th, 2009
Why we need private universities
Our university system has in general failed to produce graduates with right aptitude and attitude. As most of them are not fit enough to be employed (unemployables) or trained to undertake challengers the country has no choice but to depend of private education.
<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Sri Lanka one time had one of the best education systems in the world but systematically ruined by extremist elements like Sisuhanda by eternally not allowing necessary reforms incorporated to the education system. This caused the talented and committed academic staff not wanting to waste their valuable time with a set of brainwashed lunatics who want the rest of the world have empathy with them.
Having said this, the present scenario is no government in the world would be in a position to rightly identify the future demands in the world job market and make timely adjustments and introductions to the university programs considering the speed at which evolution of new knowledge is taking place. This is an unimaginable task to accomplish. The only way out is to allow the profit oriented private sector to do the job. They will not survive unless they self sustain by offering quality education.
What the county need are graduates for jobs and not jobs for unemployables graduates. Therefore we need institutions for not so bright average children as well to study either with the hard earned legal money of their parents or with what they themselves would earn in part-time or full time employment whilst studying.
For Sisuhanda having money is a crime. Simply because they don’t have it and they are so lethargic to work for it. They do not see the born rich becoming paupers no time for not understanding how money works. Similarly they do not see the majority of who are rich today were one time poor. No rich person is rich because of what they possess. They are rich for what they have accomplished. I think this is enough for them to understand why they are poor.
[Sisuhanda graduates (the brightest lot) who graduate form free state universities need not have any fears since they will outshine the useless not so bright rich students who will have no standard since they paid and bought degrees from useless education shops. Furthermore we will be fortunate to see all high Z scorers are well employed and the useless wealthy lot in front of the Fort Railway Station or at Lipton roundabout with placards in hand demanding for state jobs].

Firstly, I am thankful for the free education I got from the University of Moratuwa. Here, your chance to enter Universities is not based on right aptitude or attitude but on the capacity available in those institutes. Meaning, the majority of A/L candidates even with the right aptitude and attitude do not get the opportunity to enter a state Uni. Out of this majority, there are two categories of people. One- those who can spend 6 Mn; the other- those who cannot spend that. It is really a sad plight for the second category no doubt. But should this block the first category getting a higher level of education? Who can stop the 6 Mn guys going overseas and spending 12 Mn to get that qualification ? This is our country's funds and wealth that is syphoned overseas. If at all if someone can stop this, it none other than the Govt itself. How ? by allowing the 6 Mn degree here !! 'Sisuhanda', if the govt tries to charge 6 Mn from the State Uni students, it is then that you should raise your voice. Many of us too, will join you no doubt !!! At the same time, remember we have got 6 Mn worth of stuff FREE, so we have to pay back that to our country and society....

Well said, Nihal Muller. Sisuhanda, you really must change your attitude. Your phrases depict your attitude well. Defend free education (it will be there, no doubt), Demand (?) decent facilities (don't look a gift horse in the mouth). Get together to fight this very profit system (so that other countries will benefit). We challenge ... to answer our questions (really, you have the answer as you are standing on your own tail. However, if you question intellectually, you will be answered intellectually.) There is more to life and education that come in the forms of 'appreciation, acceptance, gratitude, respect, content, repayment", and many more. If you are based in Sri Lanka, why does your web address have the Nauru code? Obviously you are have benefited from the free education granted by the GoSL.. What are you doing in Nauru? You are indebted to Sri Lanka and you have absolutely no right to incite people against their own country. We've seen your likes. Really we witnessed the end of one just not so long ago. You sit in comfort and want others to die for some silly dream. Please, please, live and let live. If you honestly need something done, just start with the man in the mirror.

"We reject all reformism, even though we fight for the same in winning transitional rights..." That's an oxymoron, ha? Here's another: "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." - Winston Churchill. "...our struggle is only for International Socialism which is the only alternative to the world going to the doom under capitalism." Yay!! Let's all glide back to the dark ages!!!

Can our poor country afford spending so much money in sending students abroad for studies. If the same Overseas university can come to sri Lanka and award the same degree here, why worry. Welcome 10 more affiliated universities such as SAITM to our country. Pathirana
