Sri Lanka to issue wasp protection jackets for tourists UPDATES

UPDATE 2:

Aug 15, Colombo: Visitors to the world famous Sigiriya rock fortress came under another wasp attack this morning at the top of the rock, the police said.

Nearly 22 visitors were injured in the wasp attack and have been admitted to the Sigiriya Hospital.

UPDATE 1:

65 tourists were attacked by wasps while climbing the Sigiriya rock fortress on Friday, August 7 2009.

About 65 tourists were injured by wasp attack in this famous tourism site Friday.

Rescuers wearing protective gear called "exposure suits" worked their way up to the fortress to help the tourists who were trapped there.

Tourists observe as rescuers with exposure suits are going to help tourists who were trapped by wasp attack at the top of the rock at Sigiriya, a place about 160 km northeast of Sri Lankan capital Colombo, Aug. 7, 2009.

Whether the tourists were wearing wasp protection jackets during their climb has not been confirmed.

The Sri lanka Cultural Affairs Ministry plans to distribute wasp jackets to tourists climbing the Sigiriya rock fortress which is one of Sri lanka's famous cultural heritage sites. This move comes after several tourists including a Buddhist monk was attacked by wasps while climbing the rock.

Whether the Cultural Affairs Ministry will be charging tourists for the use of the wasp jackets is not yet known.

COLOMBO, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Special wasp protection jackets will be issued to tourists climbing a famous cultural heritage site in central Sri Lanka after wasp attack injuring over 80 visitors last week, a local newspaper said Wednesday on its website.

    The Daily Mirror said in an attempt to reopen the Sigiriya rock fortress for visitors, some special wasp protection jackets will be issued by the Cultural Affairs Ministry.

    The Sigiriya rock fortress was ordered a temporary closure on Thursday following wasps attack on the visitors continued in two days.

    Some 2O people including two foreigners received hospital treatment after being stung by wasps on Wednesday while at least 60 hikers including a Buddhist monk, two foreigners and four children were subjected to another wasp attack on Thursday.

Look like wasps are the main concern of Sri Lanka Government now..! They have almost eliminated the attacks by some "mammals" .

When wasps get too plentiful and aggressive here, we call out the exterminators.  All creatures deserve to live but can't we set boundaries?  We don't let bears move into the cities, and why let wasps take over a monument?
