Sri Lanka rebels offer to lay down arms
On Sunday afternoon, the tattered and nearly defeated rebel group offered to lay down its arms, saying it was acting to protect the wounded in the war zone.
"This battle has reached its bitter end," rebel official Selvarasa Pathmanathan said in a statement. "It is our people who are dying now from bombs, shells, illness and hunger. We cannot permit any more harm to befall them. We remain with one last choice — to remove the last weak excuse of the enemy for killing our people. We have decided to silence our guns."
Pathmanathan said the bodies of thousands of dead and wounded civilians lay on the battlefield.
The last 3 months assault on Tamils has cost over 7000 Tamils civilians in Sri Lanka and made over 100,000 as IDPs in the detention camps.
The U.N. says 7,000 civilians were killed and 16,700 wounded from Jan. 20 through May 7. Health officials say more than 1,000 have been killed since then in heavy shelling that rights groups and foreign governments have blamed on Sri Lankan forces. The government denied shelling the area.
Sinhalese majority celebrated the deaths of 7000 Tamils and the defeat of Tamils's fight for freedom in Colombo, while the Tamils in Colombo feared the 1983 Black July could be repeated.
Thousands of Sri Lankans danced, set off celebratory fireworks and beat on drums in celebration Sunday after Rajapaksa made an initial declaration of victory.
The racist war front has reached a bitter end for Tamils in Sri Lanka.
That this is a racist war is not a secret. I would not go so far as to use the word genocide, but it would not surprise me to see it used in future international legal action against the government. At any rate, the government itself has plastered the countryside with enormous placards lauding the military with the slogan, in Sinhala, the language of the Sinhalese majority to which I too, belong, stating: "Soldiers, our race salutes you!" Not "the people", not "the country", but the race. And all these placards exhibit the stated provenance of the Ministry of Defence or other government institutions. Interestingly, none of these hoardings are in Tamil, the language of the people the government claims it is seeking to liberate.
The second war on ethnic cleansing of torture, rape and killing of Tamil IDPs at the detention camps and the captured Tamils regions is expected to get worse.
The outspoken Tamil doctors of the "safety zone" are missing in Sri Lanka; these doctors were last seen at the Omanthai Sri Lankan Army checkpoint and never been heard since. The Sri Lankan government has denied any connection to their disappearances.
The missing doctors are Dr. Thangamutha Sathiyamoorthy, Dr. Thurairaja Varatharajah, Dr. V Shanmugarajah and Vany Kumar (London-trained administrative officer).

'The Sri Lankan government has denied any connection to their disappearances."
The usual response from the government.

NO. Why are you always thinking like this? Get over LTTE and do something good for these people. LTTE has done nothing to these people. What they have done is, declaring a ceasefire and laying down arms when nothing is left. In fact it is to protect LTTE supporters in other countries including Pathmanadan (KP).
