Sri Lanka’s First Highway Opened
Sri Lanka’s first Highway(E- 01 Southern Expressway) was ceremonially declared open by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. The 95-kilometer expressway runs from Kottawa in Colombo district to Pinnaduwa in Galle district.
This toll levy expressway completed from Kottawa to Galle under its first stage will be later extended up to Hambantota and Kataragama.The four-lane expressway which is to be opened up to Pinnaduwa will enable motorists to reach the port city of Galle within one hour at a maximum speed of 100 Km per hour.
Japan’s Special Peace Envoy to Sri Lanka, Yasushi Akashi represented the Japanese government at the opening of the Southern expressway which has got sizable assistance from Japan. JICA provided Official Development Assistance concessional loans worth Rs 50 billion (Yen 36.2 billion) to construct 67 kms of the 4-lane expressway. The ADB, in which Japan is the main donor, funded the balance stretch of road
It has 8entry points at Kahathuduwa, Gelanigama, Dodamgoda, Welipenna, Kurundugaha Hethekma, Baddegama and Pinnaduwa. The second phase of the development will see the expressway extended to Matara and is to be opened for public in 2013.
