The Tamil Tigers have

committed terrorist acts

in the past so it is possible

they shelled their own

civilians.

The Army said the Tigers have positioned their mortars in previously declared "Safe zone" and fired mortars towards the new safe zone.

"We have never carried out such attacks on the civilians, this is clearly a fabricated story," Sri Lanka military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

"It just propaganda to tarnish the image of the government forces in the eyes of public nationally and internationally," he added.

The military spokesman said the Tigers are trying to use the civilians as their last weapon to show the world that the army is firing indiscriminately and stop the offensive.

Mortar locating radars of Army confirmed that the mortar fire was launched from the previously declared Safe Zone, the Army said.

The question is which

side is more believable.

Sri Lanka today categorically rejected the LTTE's latest claims that the military had shelled the 'safe zone' in Mullaitivu killing 2,000 civilians in 24 hours and said the Tigers are firing mortars at the new safe zone from the positions in the old safe zone.

Another view.

There is no doubt that this gruesome act is done by LTTE. The diasporan money is drying up and there is an urgent need for funds to hire professionals who can change the world's opinion so that the terror outfit's leadership can be saved.

More dead bodies, more photos. More photos, more foreign money.

I am not not yet sure who did it but this looks more and more like the propaganda that came from Gaza.

Thanks for your balance on this issue 158.

Some points I consider when these allegations are made.

  • When LTTE says 100 civilians were killed in NFZ, they show close up images of about 4-5 separate dead bodies. Why have they never taken photos of all the bodies put together in 1 photo?
  • There were times when I check the meta data (EXIF data) of these image files coming from NFZ, I have found the images to be from different dates. Some from 2008, and once even in 2004.
  • As of recent the images coming from NFZ has the EXIF data removed from the image file. Why? Wouldn't it have been better to leave the 'Date taken' to be seen?
  • All the deaths of LTTE cadres fighting in civil clothes are also put forward as Civilian deaths.

By no means am I saying that no civilian deaths have occurred by Army shelling aimed at Tigers. But LTTE is capable of shelling the Tamil people to create this tragedy. I saw on one article circulated by pro-LTTEers, a civilian has stated that they had no milk powder for weeks, and one morning they were told to come to a distribution center to collect their milk powder ration. And this man says about 5 mnts after they were in a queue, shells started hitting the queue.

So,

  1. LTTE takes most of the food meant for the civilians. (fact)
  2. On this morning they have become suddenly generous.
  3. How is it that exactly this spot where the civilians were gathered to get Milk was hit?

Thank you for a very informative comment. The LTTE has a history of terrorism and of lying about what happened.

When did the Sri Lankan government ever admit their crimes? You should ask the Human Rights Watch, UN, and SLMM about the sri lankan gov’s credibility. And the tamils from the north and east know very well how sri lankan government always turn the news to their side.

And it is very easy to build up stories if you blocked all independent media to that place.
Why deny access if you have nothing to hide?

Quotes from SLA intelligence “Sources”

Jan 2009:
1300 LTTE cadres
70.000 civilians
Army kills 10 to 15 LTTE everyday

UN Jan 2009
250.000 civilians

Apr 2009
“We do not use heavy weapons”
“But President repeatedly requested army to stop using heavy weapons”

Why requested to “stop” if you are not using them?

May 2009
The same Sri Lankan government claims they have rescued
about 200.000 escaped the “Safe-zone”.

The same government saying LTTE is hiding behind civilians is also saying LTTE is stiff resistance at the border positions!!

LTTE is holding civilities as human shields and they are killing them? Their own shields?

As a person lived 16 years under army / LTTE control I know what I m talking about. I m 100% sure taht all Tamils from north and east agree with me.
Sri Lankan state is the MOST RUTHELSS STATE TERROSITS in the world.

"build up stories if you blocked all independent media to that place."

I don't know, somehow I am inclined to believe the above said statement after reading all the LTTE propagandist's comments.

"LTTE is holding civilities as human shields and they are killing them? Their own shields?"

Yeah...! Then only the LTTE supporting  "diasporans" can go "amma, thaye , dharmam kodungo"to  the western countries wherever they live showing the pics of the dead for money. Without the money how can LTTE leadership can achieve the "cause" ?. Moreover how the LTTEsporans can save their leader from the hell hole he struck in if the west somehow stirred and managed to stop SLA actions?.

During the initial "peace demonstrations" where the "demonstrators" weilded the LTTE terrorist flags and portraits of the "fat-goat", the west spat on their face squarely as LTTE is a banned terrorist organiztion. Now this is the latest "strategy" they are employing. Sacrify their own for the "cause and the Sun-goat's welfare"

100% Sinhalese army against 100% Tamil civilians!!!
Sure the army is so nice that they won't use artillery on the safe zone.
Like in 1983 when 13 army is killed by LTTE, 3000 innocent Tamils are murdered by the Sinhalese.
How coward are you then. Incapable to find and kill the ltte responsible, you kill innocent unarmed people.
This has always been the case in Sri Lanka. No body to ask the gov, they just do what they want to do. And innocents people get killed!

What are the chances to get killed by some who has been always with you for years?
Or by 100% Sinhalese army instructed with false information using heavy weapons and thinking that they are killing terrorists?

If the gov know well what is happening inside the safe-zone. Howcome it is very late with this news?

Do LTTE suicide bombers kill innocent civilians?

3
Hiranya Malwatta

"Do LTTE suicide bombers kill innocent civilians?"

Yes they do 158 ! I don't know when was the first one, but the latest was among Tamil civilians who escaped from LTTE weeks ago.

I well remember the suicide bomb 1 year ago in Fort railway station killing and injuring a lot of people including a team of high school baseball players (D.S. Senanayake Vidyalaya) - one of those young kids was known to me. One kid was a Tamil.

Then there are the claymore mines they explode targeting passenger buses/trains in Colombo and suburbs. One claymore exploded about 300m from my house (again 1 year ago) killing 28 people and injuring over 60. A neighbor who went to help the injured said all the people were sprawling on top of each other like pigs inside the bus, dead and injured alike. It was a horribly crowded bus, and no one was sitting or standing straight it seems. I was at home and heard the bomb and then the screams of the people who witnessed it. Later I found out that there was a person I knew among the victims and 2 people whom my friends knew.

I think we have lost count of the times that this has happened, and people in the south used to carry on with their lives amidst all the bombs. And now finally, thanks to the tight security and  removing of the LTTE network that was operating in Colombo, we have not heard a bomb in months.

Just a bit of heating up will do. Like the way how people boil the ghee in winter to take it out of the vessel / bottle.  Most of the fats melts when heated properly.

This is not imposible!

Because:

  • More civilian casualties means advantage for ltte and their backers
  • Les civilian casualties means advantage for SLDF

6
Hiranya Malwatta

Another side to these civilian casualties:

If there are civilian casualties ONLY there will be medicine sent to the NFZ through ICRC. So how else can LTTE get much needed medicine for their injured cadres? So, Civilian casualties must keep happening for the LTTE's survival.

Radar info proves mortars fired at civilians were by LTTE: SL Army Mon, 2009-05-11 04:07

Ruwan Weerakoon from Colombo

Colombo, 11 May, (Asiantribune.com): The news story carried by certain Foreign news agencies alleging that 378 civilians were killed and 1,122 injured due to artillery shelling by the Sri Lanka Army on a hospital at Vellamullivaikkal in Mullaitivu has been strongly denied by the Sri Lanka Army.

The news reports quoted a government doctor named Dr. V. Shanmugarajah working within the No Fire Zone. This raises doubts as to the veracity of the story. Sources say that the doctor had spoken to the journalist based in Colombo by a satellite phone.

The Health Ministry says that it has not provided any satellite (or sat) phones to any of the ministry officials in the conflict zone.

Good information.

I did not know radar could track amortar.

3
lalith

There are special radars called "Mortar Locating Radar".

3
israeli.agent

Here, a bit of info about mortar locating radars

A Mortar Locating Radar provides quick identification to pinpoint enemy mortar positions in map co-ordinates, enabling artillery units to launch counter attacks. The system electronically, scans the horizon over a given sector several times a second, intercepting and automatically tracking hostile projectiles, then computing back along the trajectory to the origin. The co-ordinates and altitude of the weapon are then presented to the operator.

About LTTE mortars! No kidding.

First of all, we must find out whether there is actually a Dr. Shanmugarajah within the no fire zone.

Satellite phone? Perhaps Tamilnet issued him with one.
