The UN children's agency warned that a threatened Sri Lankan assault against holdout Tamil Tiger rebels risked the lives of thousands of trapped children.
EU foreign ministers reaffirmed concern about mass civilian casualties and worsening humanitarian conditions in northern Sri Lanka, saying civilians there remained in "extreme peril." "It (the Council) urges an immediate humanitarian cease-fire to allow for a U.N.-assisted evacuation of those still trapped in the conflict zone," they said in a statement.
"Two Sri Lanka air force fighter bombers continued to bomb civilian targets in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal after the announcement by the Sri Lankan forces that it would not deploy heavy weapons or carry out air attacks," Tamilnet said, citing S. Puleedevan, director of the Tamil Peace Secretariat.
