Sri Lankan Army Captured Kilinochchi LTTE's Capital

Sri Lankan Brave Soldiers a moment ago captured Kilinochchi Town totally after hours long fighting with LTTE on January 2nd 2009. Troops of 58 Division coming from North and 57 Division Troops coming from South linked together.


Few Artillery shots hit by fleeing Ltte tigers from Mulathivu direction. Ltte carders who occupied Town area withdraw to Puthukuduiruppu and Vishvamadu jungles.Troops captured Kilinochchi railway station and Hospital today noon. SL troops of 571 Brigade lead by Lieutenant Colonel Harendra Ranasinghe have beaten off the terrorists from the Railway Station. LTTE launched a counter attack to 571 Brigade and troops successfully repulsed it.


Meanwhile Pro LTTE Tamilnet Says"It is the first time after a decade the Sri Lankan forces have been able to take control of the town after several months of fierce fighting that has claimed hundreds of combatants on both sides of the war.

Most of the buildings in the town were partly damaged or completely destroyed by continuous air strikes and artillery barrage by the Sri Lankan forces.

Meanwhile, source close to the LTTE told TamilNet that the Tigers, who had put up heavy resistance so far, had kept their casualties as low as possible in the defensive fighting."


After President Mahinda Rajapakse's speech Crackers fired every where and peoples celebrating the victory. 


Yesterday Sri Lankan Army 58 Division and Sri Lanka Army 57 Division troops encircle the Town by three directions. Last week Sri Lankan Army totally broke the LTTE built “L” shaped earth Bund. December 31 Sri Lankan troops(TF 1) entered Paranthan Junction, January 1st 57 Division captured Iranamadu and finally TF 1 again captured Karadipokku junction today located along the A-9 main road. LTTE's well-famous "93 Base", the main command and administrative centre of LTTE female cadres, is also now under army's control.


The Kilinochchi, LTTE tiger’s administrative capital is a strategically important Town and this achievement is considered as the vital Victory ever in the Sri Lankan Army history.Killinochchiis a small city in the Kilinochchi District, part of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Killinochchi is situated at the A9 road some 334 Km away from Colombo and 100 km south-east of Jaffna.


The fall of Kilinochchi is imminent within the next 48 hours as Security Forces have already entered the Kilinochchi town from the South, West and North of Kilinochchi, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka told yesterday.




On September 29 1998, the LTTE launched operation Unceasing Waves II, an offensive against the town of Kilinochchi and Captured it.

President Mahinda Rajapakse moments ago announced that the LTTE political and military capital Kilinochchi has been captured by the military. In his address to the nation he said that this was a victory for the whole nation and this was the mandate given to him by the masses at the 2005 Presidential Elections. He also issued the final call for the LTTE to surrender and release all civilians in the Wanni.
