Sri Lankan Parliament dissolved-Election On 8th April
Sri Lankan Parliament has been dissolved with effect midnight today (February 09) and the Gazette notification has been sent to the Government Printer, says the President’s Office.General Election will be held on 8th April 2010.
The term of the 225 member sixth Parliament of the Socialist Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka was due to end by April this year. The dissolution was widely expected after the arrival of President Mahinda Rajapaksa from his visit to the Russian Federation. The last General Elections were held in 2004.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has dissolved Parliament and the gazette notification to this effect has been sent to the government printer, Presidential spokesman Lucien Rajakarunanayake told Daily Mirror Online.
General elections are expected to be held on April 8 and nominations for the polls are to be called between February 19-26, sources had earlier told Daily Mirror online.
Key political parties contesting the elections including the ruling UPFA and the main opposition UNP are in the process of finalizing the nominations of their parties for the polls. (KA)
