Sri Prakash Gossai Died in US, Popular Hindu Pandit Passes

Popular Hindu pandit Prakash Gossai has died of heart failure in a United States hospital. Sri Prakash Gossai passed away June 15, 2009 after being flown to his adopted homeland of the United States for treatment of an illness. Prakash Gossai had been on tour promoting his message of love and peace when he fell sick.

Prakash Gossai was born into a devout Hindu family and always felt a religious calling to teach the Sanatan Dharma. His parents Pandit Bissondial and Shrimati Rewti Gossai raised him with a strong sense of the faith he so devoutly served. As a teen Prakash Gossai was a member of the Mahatma Gandhi Organization in Georgetown, Guyana.
In 1984 Sri Prakash Gossai founded the Bhuvaneshwar Mandir in Brooklyn, New York and led the community there for decades. Prakash Gossai has received many accolades and awards during his career as a spiritual leader:
- recognized at Devi Mandir in Pickering, Ontario, Canada for his contribution to the Canadian Hindu community
- received an award from the Premier of Ontario and the honorable John Hastings, Member of Provincial Parliament for his contribution to the Hindu community in the Province of Ontario, Canada
- Federation of Hindu Temples presented him with an award for his dedication, commitment and support to the Hindu Temples of Canada
- Lifetime Membership was given by Devi Mandir recognizing his fund raising contribution to the Mandir in excess of $200K over the last four years
- Government of Guyana presented Prakashji with the Medal of Service award on the anniversary of Guyana’s Independence, for his positive contribution and commitment to his native land
- New York City Council and the Tri-state Alliance recognized Shri Prakashji for his humanitarian services, as well as his contribution and commitment to the community in the field of culture and religion
Sri Prakash Gossai died peacefully at the hospital. Memorial service plans will soon be announced.
Gossai, a Special Assistant in the Office of the President at the time of his passing, was also a popular singer of Hindu devotional songs. He returned several years ago and presided over numerous yajnas and other religious functions. He recently participated in a multi-denomination service in Berbice that was well attended.
Prakashji is an excellent orator and his powerful discourses are attended by thousands of devotees from various walks of life. He has magnificently brought to light the relevance of the Dharmic way of life, the noble concept of family, brotherhood, social order and the just polity inherent in the Ramayan to the modern world. His emphasis is on the philosophical interpretation of Hinduism and to highlight the essence of the true scientific spirit behind this great tradition.
In May 2004, Bhuvaneshwar Mandir relocated from Brooklyn, New York to a new venue at 86-06 101 Avenue, Ozone Park. Queens. New York to better serve the Hindu community and the devotees of Bhuvaneshwar Mandir. The first anniversary of Bhuvaneshwar Mandir in Queens, New York was celebrated with a one-month Yagna, which commenced on May 30th and concluded on June 26th 2005. This was also the 21st year for Bhuvaneshwar Mandir in New York. During these celebrations many devotees and members of the Mandir were recognized with certificates and awards for their contribution, dedication and tireless work. Students of the Mandir showcase their talent throughout this event.

For anyone who knew Prakashji well knows the wonderful soul he was. For me and my family, the guidance and love and support he has shown us over the years without expecting ANYTHING in return will never be forgotten. He was our guru and our lives will forever feel the void of not having him in our lives. Your lovely bajans will continue to fill our home for years to come. We love you Guruji. A great soul have been lost here. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED....by the Hindu Community thru out the United States and else where and those lives he has touch. To those who knew Prakashji he was a wonderful and one of a kind person Pandit anyone could have meet and also a great singer. I will continue to play his bhajan in my home every Sunday morning. May his soul rest in peace and my deepest sympathy to his Family. Seetaram!!!!

How dare you ignorant people berate the dead? What values are instilled in you? Prakash Gossai was an amazing man who contributed a lot to his community and his fellow brothers and sisters. This fact need not be reinstated as his values and true self are reflected in the community and people he has interacted with. However, with that said everyone is entitled to their own opinion but be mindful of the ones who are grieving over his death. His death was a shocking loss and he will greatly be missed. Please keep your selfish, ignorant attitudes and comments to yourself.

i personally know the gossai family and shri prakash gossai is from a long line of brahmans.. he is related to many other well known pandits. stop talking about things u dont know. all of you people that criticize guruji are just doing it because you are jealous you never had a chance to be in his presence, he was a sweet, humble soul, who definitely understood hinduism more that any other indo-caribbean person. stop talking about things u have no proof of, and have only heard rumours about. Guruji you will be deeplly missed, you have left a hole in our community that will be so hard to mend. Thank you for teaching us all you have about our religion.
