Stacy Bonds Video Released: Bonds Still Recovering From Ordeal
Video Taken Inside a Police Station Showing Stacy Bonds Being Manhandled By Police Officers Has Hit the Web
Stacy Bonds told the Ottawa Citizen that although it has been two years since she was arrested by police she still has trouble seeing a police cruiser going past.
Still, she says that she hopes the issue does not turn into a racial one.
“I hope and pray it’s not a racial thing. I don’t want to make it into a big black-white issue. I think it’s more of an issue of questioning authority and I’d like to tell people don’t be afraid to ask police questions. It’s your right. I’ve learned my rights and I think everyone should learn their rights and make sure they’re not stepped on,” Bonds told the Ottawa Citizen on Saturday.
Bonds was arrested in September 2008 when she was walking home from an after-hours party. When police stopped her and ran her name through the system they found nothing and told her to go home. But it was when Bonds asked why she was stopped in the first place, that they took her into the station.
In the video police can be seen being manhandled by police who cut off her shirt and bra. Special constable Melanie Morris kneed her in the leg and lower back before that and Bonds was pinned to the floor.
Bonds was then put in a cell where she remained topless and in soiled pants for three hour and fifteen minutes.
“People do need to know that police do abuse their power, and people need to speak out. But there are a lot of great cops out there, too, and people need to know that. But it only takes one bad apple to make the whole orchard look sour,” she said.
“I didn’t set out to be the public’s voice on any of this . . . This case has blown up and it’s everywhere and every time I try to grasp it, it flies out of my hands.”
The officers involved in the case are now being investigated by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit for alleged sexual assault.
We have uploaded a version of Stacy Bond's video below, but it is difficult to watch.
