In Open-Carry States, Starbucks Allows Guns in Its Coffee Shops

Coffee megalith Starbucks is maintaining its policy of allowing customers to bring guns into its shops located in US states with open-carry laws. Currently, 43 out of 50 states have open-carry laws. Starbucks' position on guns in its open-carry state shops is not a new policy.

Brady Campaign Opposes Open-Carry Demonstrations
The Brady Campaign is opposed to Starbucks' open-carry policy. Many of these open-carry "tests" were organized by opencarry.org, a pro-gun Internet community.

I'm not convinced that adding caffeine to my countryfolk's already-twitchy trigger fingers is a particularly clever idea, but open-carry is real.

Note that security professionals advise anyone who enters an active war zone, or engages in travel to "trouble spots" to avoid arming themselves: this is to prevent you from becoming target #1. Extrapolate that to anywhere guns are common... like the USA. Also remember that Die Hard was a work of fiction.

Oh, and walking into a mall with a visible pistol or rifle is a great way to meet law-enforcement officials face-to-face.

I spent my formative years in Arizona , a "gold star open-carry state" (I'm not making this term up)- seeing people walking around with guns was... weird. These folks did not look like John Wayne, and they did not make the people around them feel safe. If your goal is to look crazy and potentially dangerous, then by all means walk around with a gun, but otherwise just leave it at home. You're not The Punisher, and you're not in Somalia.

Starbucks has unwittingly found itself at the center of the debate. (See "Starbucks says leave us out of gun debate.") A company spokesperson said if it bans guns from its premises it would be turning away law-abiding customers, and that's a precedent this company doesn't want to set.

Easy idenditification, no?  Liberials will be the ones trembling in the corner, nut cases and Tea Part folks will be wearing guns, Republicans are the ones leaving big tips for the baristas packin' heat.

There's a weird presumption that somehow no liberals like guns. Clearly people who think this have never been to California.

(Americans are more effective at shooting ourselves, our family members, and innocent people than we are at shooting "bad guys"- we'd do well to remember this before taking lethal weapons, no matter how legal, out in public)

Very good piece.  I rarely hear of law abiding open carry folks robbing, shooting anyone in the public square.  In fact states with open gun laws have less crime.  The most restrictive cities and states have the highest crime rates.  The open carry states that try to deter crime by restricting  gun law find that the crime rate goes up not down...Don't I sound like an NRA talking point LOL.  Next I'll tell you I live in a bomb shelter and hate anyone who is not white, brown hair, hazel eyes... and those who don't drive a pick up truck

43 out of 50 states do not have "open carry laws" unless you're referring to law enforcement personnel on duty, security guards, armored car personnel, etc. If you mean  "open carry" to include those engaged in hunting and sport shooting then every state allows that and every state allows on-duty uniformed law enforcement personnel to "open-carry".

Sigh.  Yet another moron who obviously knows NOTHING about firearms (other than what he sees on TV and hears from the government) making jokes about those who choose to carry a firearm (a mechanical device, otherwise known as a "tool") as they go about their business.  So what?  Why does the presence of a firearm FRIGHTEN you?  Could it be that you have been CONDITIONED to fear certain "tools"?  No, Buddy this AIN'T Somalia....precisely BECAUSE we can carry firearms without being part of some warlord's enforcement thugs or a member of the military.  Thank goodness for it and God Bless America!
