Starbucks Bomb: Explosion at 92nd St. and 3rd Ave. in New York

A homemade bomb was the cause of an explosion at a Starbucks on 92nd St. and 3rd Ave. in New York, in the wee hours of Monday morning May 25, 2009. Police have no word on the reason for the Starbucks bomb attack and there is speculation that the nearby Guggenheim Museum may have been the intended target.

The bomb was fashioned out of fireworks and an unidentified accelerent and blew out the windows of the Starbucks storefront. Residents of the building that housed the Starbucks were evacuated immediately after the 3:30 am blast.

Police are looking for security footage from nearby stores and street corners for clues as to how the bomb was set and/or delivered. The manner of the Starbucks bomb has similarities to four previous attacks in New York City dating back to 2005. In previous bombings, all of which happened around the same time of day, a cyclist was seen in the area shortly before detonation.

''We don't know the motive. Obviously it is a cause for concern, but we're going to do an in-depth investigation,'' he said.

Kelly said the explosive appears to have been placed on the seat of the bench, but didn't know what kind of container it was in. He said investigators would examine the remains to determine what kind of explosive it was. He was it was possible it was some kind of firework.

Police also were looking at whether the Starbucks -- at 92nd Street and Third Avenue, a few blocks from the Guggenheim Museum -- was the target.

Guggenheim museum? Isnt this much closer to the 92nd street Y? I wonder where/why/how they came up with the link to Guggenheim which seems quite a distance away?

Awe naw, thank the lord your daughter was away Mace you must have been relieved. Why starbucks I wonder, why anywhere,for at the end of the day all the bombers do is kill innocent people.

If it is a repeat bomber then, I think he my be trying to improve his building skills.

From what I read, all the bomb did was blow out windows, so the bomb was probably not very strong. If the person doing this gets creative & some knowledge it could become much worse.(

I hope they ketch him first!

This is not a very skilled bomber, if he/she is using fireworks to build his IEDs. He/she is more of a nat on the ass of NYC. He/she could be the same person that has bombed a Military Recruting center in NYC and a few other places with low tech/low skill level IEDs. Good thing nobody was hurt, but people are not his target. He/she is one of those anti-corporate, anti-military types that support ALF/ELF.
