Approve Referendum 71: Protect all Washington Families

Starbucks joins a list of supporters of Referendum 71 that include Microsoft, Boeing, and Nike.

Seattle-based caffeine cartel Starbucks gave its blessing this week to approve Referendum 71, thereby recognizing that gay couples deserve the same morning coffee rights as their groggy, heterosexual counterparts. In a statement, the company said that approving R-71 "ensures that basic benefits and important protections are not taken away from committed couples, so they are able to take care of each other, especially in times of crisis." Starbucks wants voters to approve the measure "because it is aligned with our business practices, providing domestic partner benefits, and one of our core values of treating people with respect and dignity.”

Voting APPROVE on Referendum 71 is a vote to keep the domestic partnership law that provides legal protections for lesbian and gay couples and seniors who are in committed relationships.

The Washington State Legislature signed into law SB 5688, which would expand the rights and responsibilities of state registered domestic partnerships. Opposition to SB 5688 led to the Referendum 71 Petition which gathered over 138,000 signatures.

Anti-discrimination  groups who were trying to publicize the names on the petition were unsuccesful.

According to a press release issued by Protect Marriage Washington on October 20th, the United States Supreme Court prevented the release of Referendum Petitions in Washington.

[A] full panel of the Supreme Court of the United States, in an 8-1 vote, issued an order preventing the Washington Secretary of State from releasing the names, addresses, and other personal information of over 138,000 individuals that signed a referendum petition that seeks to protect traditional marriage in Washington. The order will prevent several groups from making this personal information available on the internet and should protect the petition signers from the harassment similar to what occurred in California last November during the campaign surrounding Proposition 8.

Protect Marriage advocates hold a 'traditional' view of marriage. That is: Marriage Equals One Man, One Woman.
