State assembly passes bill to legalize gay marriage in New York
The State Assembly has passed a bill to legalize gay marriage in New York state, but this is only the first step to getting the bill through the process.
Governor David Paterson introduced the measure last month, and today it passed with 89 to 52 in the state's lower house, but a similar bill also passed like this in 2007.
"New Yorkers should have the right to marry who they chose. Partners unable to enter into a civil marriage, and their children, lack basic legal protections taken for granted by married couples," Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said.
If the bill does pass, New York would become the next state after Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont and Iowa to legalize gay marriage.

They should legalize it so the California legislators can realize they're idiots and follow suit.

Legislatures should decide the fate of gay marriage.
"New Yorkers should have the right to marry who they chose"
Even if this passes many groups will not have the right to marry who they choose.
"They should legalize it so the California legislators can realize they're idiots and follow
suit."
The legislature had nothing to do with it. The CA court legalized gay marriage and the
CA voters overturned it.
