Stefanie Rengel's killer, known only as D.B, wept in court today when asked by her mother if her daughter had begged for mercy before he stabbed her six times and left her to die in a snowbank on January 1 2008.

"I lie awake at night wondering if he spoke to her before he plunged in a knife over and over," said Patricia Hung, Rengel's mother.

D.B cannot be identified because he was only 17 when he committed the murder. He pleaded guilty to the crime however and admitted that he killed the 14-year old because his girlfriend Melissa Todorovic manipulated him in to it. She has been sentenced as an adult to life in prison with no chance of parole for seven years; that was the maximum sentence for someone under 16-years-old.

Todorovic was only 15 when she sent texts to DB and used MSN to pressure him in to murdering Rengel, whom she had never even met.

The hearing now underway for D.B. will determine whether he will also be sentenced as an adult.

He could face life with no chance of parole for 10 years if he is convicted. D.B knew Stefanie's family before he killed her, and said that there was no excuse for what he did.

Stefanie's brother Ian said how someone could kill someone else just because a girl told him to was beyond his comprehension.
