Stephanie Gilmore Attacked at Tweed Heads Apartment Complex

Stephanie Gilmore, four-time world surfing champion, was attacked with a metal bar as she was coming home to her apartment in Tweed Heads, NSW. 22-year-old Gilmore fought off the attacker, wo escaped on a bicycle. Other residents of the apartment complex chased down the assailant, detaining him until police arrived.

One of Stephanie Gilmore's neighbors took the attacker's photo with a digital camera, bringing the image to Gilmore for confirmation.

Stephanie Gilmore suffered head injuries and a broken wrist. She is expected to be out of the water for up to six weeks.

Gilmore, 2007-2010 ASP world champion, was taken to the Tweed Heads Hospital for treatment after the assault.

Police say her attacker returned to Gilmore's unit complex later that night. He was seen by her friends and neighbours, who detained him until police arrived.

A shaken Gilmore put on a brave smile yesterday after being released from hospital.

She said she would be out of the water for up to six weeks.
