Stephanie Lazarus, veteran detective for the LAPD, has been charged with murder for killing her ex-boyfriend's wife, Sherri Rasmussen, 23 years ago.

Stephanie Lazarus, 49, could potentially face the death penalty because prosecutors alleged a special circumstance in the case: that she killed Sherri Rae Rasmussen, who was badly beaten and shot multiple times in her Van Nuys condominium on the evening of Feb. 24, 1986, during a burglary.

Police originally passed over Lazarus as a suspect in favour of two male robbers who had attacked another woman nearby and whom Rasmussen had encountered in her home. However, DNA tests later showed the perpetrator was a woman. The victim's connection to Lazarus was discovered in case files, and Lazarus's DNA was then matched to DNA evidence from the crime scene.
The victim's father, Neil Rasmussen, long believed Lazarus to be his daughter's killer. According to the Los Angeles Times, Rasmussen claimed Lazarus threatened his daughter in the months before her murder. At the time the police were "dismissive" of his requests to have Lazarus investigated.

The poor woman who she killed, and it took so long to be brought to an arrest!

hold on just a minute...the mere fact that she is a police officer does not make her guilty of the murder.  a jury will determain that issue.  innocent until proved guilty even if you are a police officer.

I am sure that Stephanie Lazarus will avail herself of all the rights of a criminal defendant.  It sounds like William Kiefer thinks that police officers are above the law. I guess being a cop means that you have all the rights but none of the responsibilities that go along with the rights.  Certainly DNA should be gathered from every police officer and all DNA checked to see if there is a match since police officers are such angels they shouldn't mind having their DNA subject to scrutiny.

Aren't most police investigations developing leads and suspects for a murder begin with spouse ?, cheating spouse? cheating spouse's jealous lover ?, friends?, co-workers?, recent conflicts?, people with access to the home and finally way down the list of possibilities...a random act of violence. This poor victim had told her parents and friends that she was having unwanted confrontations with Lazarus. (I don't know if she had spoken to her husband's employer about the problem)  But the detective who retired in 1991 still claiming he "believed it was robbers" clearly used the now famous ABC THEORY:  Anybody But Cops should be investigated for crimes.   I am happy Sherri's father's asser-tions have finally come to roost, but profoundly sad for their suffering as well.

It is pretty incredible how long the whole thing took.  I agree, happy for the family that the case has finally been resolved and that they can feel at least some justice has been retributed, but sad for them that the entire ordeal had to be dragged out for such a long time.

The prosecution is going to allege Lazarus broke into Rassmusen's condo and was discovered by the victim when the victim came home unexpectedly.  A fight ensued wherein Lazarus shot and killed the victim.  In that case it would be first degree murder because the murder occurred during the commission of a felony, burglary.  However, there were only two people present when the murder occurred, Lazarus and the victim.  Therefore, the defense will challenge the homicide detectives on the stand to prove Lazarus broke into the condo.  The defense will contend that Lazarus when to the condo to speak to the victim.  The victim became enraged and a fight ensuded.  Lazarus used deadly force in self defense.  The defense will ask the jury to find Lazarus either not guilty of murder or guild of involuntary manslaughter.  In my opinion, she will be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to three years in prison. She will retire from the police department, collect her pension and live happily ever after.

I don't think she has a chance in hell. She was on-duty, or so they say,and  the victim had bite marks on her neck.  They'll most likely dredge up the victim's friends and co-workers to testify she had been threatened. No matter what, Lazarus is going away for the rest of her life. The victim was married at the time she was killed and no matter what reason Lazarus may have had for going there she killed her. Even more importantly, Lazarus had teh opportunity to come clean on what happened 23 years ago and that isn't going to bode well with a jury. The fact she was a police officer and most likely abused her ability to violate almost every penal and civil law in existence will work against her as well. The LAPD didn't want to investigate one of their own and didn't. Luckily, the LAPD no longer operates the way they once did or the old DNA evidence would have been destroyed years ago.

In reference to the comments by Michael Davis, yes it is so sad that our own police that they are to " Protec & Serve" but who protects us from them? when they make such a horrible crime? it is not the only incident that has been out in the open, look at Mr Perez & Mr Dunden, from the Rampart station thinking that they killed Mr Ovando, and left him for death, http://archives.cnn.com/2001/LAW/12/17/lapd.plea/to their surpirze he was alive and was taken to a hospital to find himself criple for the rest of his life due to a so called "victim of a gang shooting" when the Police was the one who shot him with a "stolen gun"  who was in possesion of the LAPD officer and made it appear as a gang shooting, latter on Perez and his partner ended up in court with a law suit that costed us tax payers 15 Million dollars. Not only did it cvosted us money but both officers will be free one day....and most likeley they will

Are we going to pay more money for another suit with the Lazarus case? and worse yet she will do a plea bargain to blame things on LAPD ( since they know what's going on all around the force)to walk away after some "vacation in a private cell", this is crazy!
are we going to condone this acts made by Police officers that are jealous and triger happy?
we must ensure this does not become a path of repeated "power challenge" let's get it over and execute justice to the family who don't have their daughter around to point the finger at the "perpetrator of the crime"
