Republican Steve Buyer announced today that he will not seek re-election in Indiana this year. Buyer said his wife Joni Buyer was the main reason for his retirement, but he has also faced some tough questions over a scholarship foundation. His wife however, has an incurable autoimmune disease.

Steve Buyer was first elected in 1992 and he choked back his tears during his resignation speech.

“Now is the time for me to step back. It’s been an honor,” said Mr. Buyer, the ranking Republican member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Steve Buyer becomes the 15th House Republican to announce he will not stand for re-election in 2010. However, Indiana has always been largely Republican, so it is not known if this is a chance for Democrats to take the seat away.
