Is the Stimulus failing?
You hear a lot from Republicans that the $787 Billion Stimulus Package is failing. They shout things like, "Where are the Jobs?" They do all of this complaining while they are the ones standing in the way of success.
Something that many people do not realize is that the $787b price tag is spread out over a ten year period. The $78.7b for this year has largely gone unspent and unclaimed. There are success stories to be found. The complaints abound about how the beneficiaries are spending the money. Most stories mention these things, but overshadow the facts with blaming the government or the bill itself.
Many argue that the spending that is taking place is not going to worthy projects. Most of the states where the problems lie are Republican run states. Mississippi's Haley Barbour made every attempt to reject the funds. South Carolina, Alaska and Louisiana's Republican governors also have attempted to reject the funding. So, where are the jobs? The Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to prevent any from taking shape.
Out of the top 20 states in stimulus spending on Road projects, only six have republican governors. The bottom 10 are evenly split, while the bottom 20 are 9 Dem, 11 Repub. Some of those have been circumvented by their state's congress and forced to accept the funds.
Many of the republican governors rejected the funds for the Unemployment benefits, citing that accepting would force changes in their unemployment agencies. It seems, to me at least, they don't want to help the recently fired to get by and pay bills until they find another job, despite the unemployment tax that employers pay.
