A new generation of activists is emerging after voters recently passed Proposition 8 in California, and "they're calling it Stonewall 2.0".

Outraged by California voters’ ban on same-sex marriage, a new wave of advocates, shaken out of a generational apathy, have pushed to the forefront of the gay rights movement, using freshly minted grass-roots groups and embracing not only new technologies but also old-school methods like sit-ins and sickouts.

Matt Palazzolo, 23, a self-described “video artist-actor turned gay activist,” founded one group, Equal Roots Coalition, with a group of friends about 10 days ago. “I’d been focused on other things in my life,” Mr. Palazzolo said. “Then Nov. 4 happened, and it woke me up.”

Often young and politically inexperienced, the new campaigners include an unlikely set of leaders, among them a San Francisco chess teacher, a search-engine marketer from Seattle and a former contestant on “American Gladiators,” who jokingly suggested that he had become involved in the movement as a way of making up for his poor performance on the show.

“We’re a gay couple in West Hollywood, neither of us involved in activism, but we just wanted to help,” said Sean Hetherington, 30, a stand-up comic who was the first openly gay contestant ever to do battle, however briefly, in the Gladiator Arena. “And we were amazed at what happened.”

Mr. Hetherington and his companion were among several people surprised by the strength of positive reaction after starting Web sites geared toward a demonstration planned for [today] Wednesday, “Day Without a Gay.” Its organizers are asking gay rights supporters to avoid going to work by “calling in gay” and volunteering in the movement instead.

Many grass-roots leaders say the emergence of new faces, and acceptance of tactics that are more confrontational, amount to an implicit rejection of the measured approach of established gay rights groups, a course that, some gay men and lesbians maintain, allowed passage of the ban, Proposition 8.

“I think we are demanding as a community that we democratize our processes and ensure we all have a voice,” said Molly McKay, media director of the volunteer group Marriage Equality USA. “Because we are not a campaign. We are a movement.”

The voters have spoken, twice. So sore losers want to take it to the courts and overturn an election result. It’s a dangerous road to go down when your vote does not count. Don't like the election results, go to court. May as well be a dictatorship.

I agree...

I wasn't happy with the way the presidential election ended up, BUT...

I believe in this country and the system we have worked so hard to get.  No it's not perfect, but it's better than any other system I've seen.

I am proud of this country and the system we have in place...and if we start saying that votes do not count, then we lose the very foundation of this countries system...democracy.

Why is it that Democracy is great as long as special interests are getting their way?

I'm not saying that they should fight for what that believe, but when the people speak, the votes should count.

Like I said, I was not happy with the way the election turned out, but I will stand behind this country and it's leaders because that is who the people voted for...

This sure underlines the responsibility of every citizen to vote in elections.

0
NKAWTG

What responsibility? If your vote doesn't count because the loser took it to court and had the election result overturned, why bother voting?

Jawa Lunk

If we make the votes not count because the squeaky wheel gets oiled, we have tore down what so many have given their lives for.

Well a lot of the voters against it were black or hispanic which goes to show there's work to be done towards acceptance in those groups. It's ironic and a bummer, too, since a great hurdle was made with Obama becoming president. Gloria Stienem once said when I saw her speak that women, minorities and gays are all on the same side. Hopefully we'll come to a point where that's more recognized. I've always thought Gay Rights are the last on the frontier of civil rights, but we also have illegal immigrants that want rights and human rights violations all over the world.

This surely has revitalized the gay rights movement. Join the Impact orchestrated protests in every state only a week after establishing their website (and started developing the day without gays).

lefty_liberated, thank you for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation. I agree that "there's work to be done towards acceptance in those groups." Yet, there is no doubt in my mind that the 'new' "Gay Rights Movement" will succeed in its endeavors in the very near future, and the perceived 'minority' will be on equal footing with the perceived 'majority'.

If they were a majority in that area wouldn't the vote have passed?

While racism is based on appearance anti gay feeling is based on actions and that is usually a more emotional issue.

158, thank you for commenting. I apologize for the delay in responding -- You might want to read, "What causes homophobia?" There are many different causes, and one is negative messages about GLBT from family, society, and religion.

danesller0127, no need to apologize:) It is very unfortunate when groups perceived as minorities have to fight for their rights. Nevertheless, it is necessary and I wish this particular group of people the very best in their endeavors; they will succeed!

Rhonda, it's perfectly legitimate to perceive gays as a minority in this country.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has estimated America's gay, lesbian, and bisexual population at around 8.8 million people. That translates to somewhere between 2.5 and 3 percent.

So when you bandy about the word perceived, are you attempting to deceive people? Are you implying gays are not a minority?

NKAWTG, thank you for reading and commenting. I would appreciate it if you would provide a link to the stats you offer. I will then address the balance of your comment. Thanks!

Boy George Bush is furious.  He's been proud of stonewalling for the past eight years and he just found out what it means.
