Omar al-Bashir defied the International Criminal Court arrest warrant on Monday and traveled to Eritrea; his first trip abroad since his charge of war crimes in Darfur.

Eritrea had invited al-Bashir for the one day trip, but due to the arrest warrant, he is not supposed to travel. On television, al-Bashir was shown arriving in Eritrea and being greeted by President Isaias Afwerki, and then later, leaving the country and traveling back to Khartoum.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Deng Alor said the visit was "important" and reflected Eritrean "solidarity ... with Sudan against the ICC." Eritrean Information Minister Ali Abdu told The Associated Press that al-Bashir was accompanied by heads of security and intelligence and was there to discuss regional security.

It was on March 4th that the ICC issued the arrest warrant for crimes against humanity in Darfur, but al-Bashir has so far ignored the warrant and even expelled aid agencies from the region.
In Darfur so far, about 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been made refugees since 2003.
