Alexander Lee Suddeath, 6, and Heidi Elizabeth Suddeath, 4 from Kingsport Tennessee, have been found in the North Carolina Mountains about 24 hours after they had gone missing while on a family hiking trip.

They both wandered off from the Roan Mountain Recreation Area along the Tennessee border, and searchers found the boy's shoes earlier today and then both the children were found safe.

An Amber Alert was issued for their whereabouts and the media called it a 'child abduction'.

"The parents lost sight of them for just a minute," said sheriff's office dispatcher Jim English. "There's a bunch of walking trails including the Appalachian Trail and the kids started going down a trail in front of the parents."

Other people in the area at the time didn't see anything happen, he said.

The family were returning to the parking lot when they lost sight of the children. It has been a frantic 24 hours for everyone involved.
