Suicide bomber kills 16 at police checkpoint in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - At least 16eight people were killed and around 80 injured Saturday when a suicide attacker rammed his bomb-laden car into a security checkpost in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Police officials said the incident happened after officers had signalled the attacker to stop. "According to latest reports eight people were killed and dozens wounded," police officer Mohammad Ashraf said. "It was a bomb explosion.

An explosive-laden vehicle blew up near the security checkpost.

The force of the blast destroyed a nearby market, bringing the building down," Ashraf said.

Several police officials and residents are still buried under the debris and rescuers are trying to recover them.
