Summer of the Gun: Toronto Gangs
Opinion
Barry Artiste. Now Public Contributor
The “Summer of the Gun” in Toronto certainly contradicts Michael Moore’s assessment about Gun Control, when 144 shootings so far in 6 months of this year, making Toronto look like Detroit on a good day. Perhaps death by gunfire is down, thanks to medical advances in life saving techniques which a decade ago would have a different statistic.
Naming the Gangs most responsible for all the shootings being Jamaican gangs shooting and killing each other have police for the most part handcuffed as it seems not Politically Correct (PC) to Racial Profile any one group.
But if it means saving a life or two of a Jamaican Canadian man, woman and child, as stats show it is more likely an innocent Jamaican Canadian child playing in the streets, which seem to be the usual fatality. Perhaps the Politically Correctness should be put aside and police instincts should be allowed to do it’s job.
The Politically Correct Crowd, especially Politicians and the Media seem to have their head in the sand, only removing it when a crime is committed by others when it seems every news paragraph will have emblazoned upon it any Anglo Saxon gang such as White Supremacist, Eastern European, Hells Angels and other Gangs commit crimes. Though the media seem to have no problem when mentioning Persian or Middle eastern crime Gangs, especially if drugs, murder or desecration of gravestones occur.
Yet when it comes to gangs where a non white culture or ethnic tag should be mentioned, the media are moot for the most part, leaving many to wonder what the media mean when they state only the term 'Gang Hit" in the city! Is this a subliminal clue that when no mention of the gang colours or cultural or ethnic origin is mentioned that the citizenry are to safely assume that perhaps this is non Anglo Saxon gang? H-m-m-m sure smacks of reverse discrimination to me.
Certainly a story which hits a cultural if not politically correct nerve in the press yesterday on immigration in regards to cultural gangs who upon arrival in North America seem to take up their criminal bent where they left off in their country of origin and bring to North America. Judging by the comments yesterday (1), it seems too touchy for readers to comments or discuss. Though it is news, and Canadians like it or not polled in this media story seemed to have an opinion on it.
This is the story below which it seems is being avoided like the plague. Some it seems only like to read Fluff stories I guess? Reporting is supposed to be just that, reporting, not pick and choose "Fairy Dust, PC journalism."
http://www.nowpublic.com/world/time-immigration-time-out
To be fair Media normally mention areas where crimes occur, if not the cultural or ethnicity of the gangs where where the hit or crime went down, that is a clue to citizens of that city of which area the gang frequents. But you know it is a clueless news report for everyone else who live clear across the country or nearby city, especially for those tourists in the city who could use that information when on sightseeing tours, oblivious to the fact that perhaps they would be wise to steer clear from these areas, certainly have the right to fair warning, regardless how much the Mayor and politicians like to sugar coat their city as crime free.
Imagine if you will, tourists on a walking tour, at 7pm walking in our Vancouver's Gastown or China town and taking in the sights, arm in arm they stroll all agog and bedazzled with our city's beauty and mountains. When all of a sudden the tourists accidentally take a wrong turn a find themselves smack in the middle of East Hastings Needle Park, which is another world entirely, and at night, it looks like the "4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse" hit town. You know, perhaps that would be good info for Tourists to know beforehand if Media and the City Fathers had the Testicular Fortitude to forewarn the tourists, but never do.
Certainly when the media are relied upon to report a story in its entirety, one wonders if Journalistic integrity has now been "Muzzled" by Politics and Political Correctness. Communist Countries and Dictatorships muzzle the press, one would think that would not happen here.
So the question remains, has Journalistic integrity and Politics bowed down to Political Correctness? In my Opinion, it always has.
In ending, if a crime occurs, it should be reported in it's entirety, including photos and background regardless of the gangs involved. That is News!

Prosecute the shooters, not the guns
By PETER WORTHINGTON
Ironically, Toronto is in the midst of another "Summer of the Gun" -- at a time when Statistics Canada tells us (reassures us?) that it is the safest city in Canada.
Tell that to the 144 people who've been shot this year -- up 22% over shootings this time last year.
And there's five months to go.
So what if murders are down from last year? Small solace, when one considers that every person wounded by gunfire this year is alive only because the shooter missed a vital organ.
Crime statistics can be misleading. Also, the apparent drop in crime statistics may indicate people just don't bother reporting certain crimes, knowing that if caught, the perpetrators will plea bargain their way to ludicrously light sentences, and soon be back on the street.
To victims of crime, our justice system often does not seem very "just."
IT'S NOT THE WEATHER
I'd argue it's guns more than weather that are at fault. Or, to put it more succinctly, people who increasingly carry guns as a matter of cultural preference.
Police are handcuffed in efforts to make Toronto a safer city.
Surely we, as a society, should be examining who is doing most of the shooting. But police aren't allowed to do that, on grounds that it is racial profiling.
Yet every visible minority group knows the majority of shooters and their victims tend to be of Jamaican origin.
This is not to diss Jamaican Canadians. They are also disproportionately the victims of shootings and deserve the protection of the police.

Guns have replaced machetes as the gang weapon of choice.
at 05:52 on July 30th, 2008
You know Jordan, you are for the most part who pulls no punches, it is true, and in my experience when it comes to guns or a bladed weapon, the bladed weapon is more likely to be used against you than a gun, 9 out of 10 times. Guns for the most part are for intimidation, though when push comes to shove, they will shoot you.
I went to Home Depot and a few other Hardware stores to purchase a Machete. Why? Because I was involved in a Meth Lab investigation, which was in such a remote region, that the brambles and thorns were a half inch thick and stood over 6 feet high, with no visible access to this Meth lab which as close to a 1/4 mile from the road, I needed a machete to cut our way through. Guess what? Home Depot and other Hardware stores no longer carry them for the last couple of years. This is because Machetes are a Youth Gangs weapon of choice. In ending, I had to go to a Military Surplus to find one. I remember a time in the 70s as a boy scout, we always had a pocketknife, even in school, with nary an incident. Times certainly have changed for the worse.

Thanks Paschen and Rhonda for your comments and flags, certainly you'll agree that a media who have no problem picking the scabs of another countries shortcomings, such as Iraq, Israel, Africa, hypocritically bandage and sugar coat our problems at home when telling the whole story. One thing you have to give Now Public Media credit for is the contributors are allowed to say it like it is, no sugar coating, bare bones citizen journalism, a journalism we used to have in the mainstream, but lost long ago, big time.

Yes I do agree with you as far as North America and Europe are concerned! Well south America is no picnic either any more!

Hey Barry, thanks for posting this story. My girlfriend saw a young white guy running from an alley with a gun last week, she called the cops but they never showed up or even called her back.
It's disheartening to see these stats and then have that poor reaction from the police. What else do they want ordinary citizens to do?

Thanks Rob for the scary story and GS, my teenage son and his friend last week were walking down New West when a punk pulled a gun on them right on the street, not to rob them, just to intimidate for some unknown reason, as my son and his friend said he came out of the blue and approached them! My son thank god, is a long time Military Reservist, as well as a graduate of the RCMP youth academy. My son instantly stepped back assessed the situation, determined almost instantly the gun was a BB gun, and told the guy to piss off, whereby the punk around 20 or so years of age took off running. My son called the RCMP, in which the Punk was apprehended (a few hours later) by RCMP and my son was mentioned in the assist in the New West News Leader last week.
Certainly not something for the faint of heart, but my son acted appropriately and did not try and tackle the punk, as the situation could have been tragic for my son.
In ending it certainly is not a surprise that some citizens protecting their property at home, against intruders sadly take matters in their own hands and arm themselves. If it were me instead of my son, when confronted by this punk, and I knew it was a BB Gun, I can't say if I would do the same, but perhaps if given into my personality at times and on a bad day, rest assured the next time this Punk pulled a gun, I may endeavor to ensure he would need a wheelchair in which to pull his next crime. But then that's just me.

Get the Jamaicans out of the country now.

Thanks for the comment Plasma, as I am sure your comment meant to say, get Jamaican Gangs out of Canada, and not the peoples as a whole.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff.
“Yet when it comes to gangs where a non white culture or ethnic tag should be mentioned, the media are moot for the most part,"
I guess it’s a fine line travelled in regards to how things are worded. With all the community groups and watchdogs out there ready to pounce on journalism’s every word, and when ones job may be on the line, one can’t be too careful.
Strange it is however, the shortcomings of one ethnic group can be pointed out and not another.
One other problem with the media is most journalists on a time schedule. Pump out the story now and move on to the next one. This of course creates a situation where ’holes’ are left in the story. These days it seems you have to view different news outlets to get the story in it’s entirety.
A videographer I sometimes chat with says the media competition is “fierce” and if one gets in a position where their “on top” there’s someone else trying to take your place.

Thanks Mike for the commentary and the flag , I am sure it is true what you say of journalist on a tight deadline, but on the other hand, I see it too often when details are missing in their story, including a story on a missing child. Guess what was missing in the story? A photo of the child! To me, the story was useless information wise, as it serves no purpose but to state a child is missing and no photo for us to assist in her safe return. You are correct when journalist leave out what other media include. We have the Vancouver Sun and the Province, two dailies, one owner, two different takes on the same story, or worse no mention of the story by one or the other or both. You would think they would be pooling their resources together. But then, I never could understand why a single owner would have two newspapers in this Burg anyways competing against each other? I still stand by my original statement, that I want the news, and I want all of it! When it comes to news, I don't want the sizzle, I want the whole friggin Steak, side salad, taters, and eating irons, cause I am hungry and do not like to guess what my main course is or isn't complete!

It comes down to the importing of the US gang culture and a massive increase in a multicultural population that admires and worships that culture. It is a totally different Canada than anyone over 40 grew up in: I don't recognise the place anymore. We see this moving like a tsunami across Europe and the UK. The same styles, the same dynamics, the same killings and drug and theft economy. Because of these guys and the terrorists, we are finding our rights being taken away and once-innocent things like having a pocket knife is seen as a weapon and worthy of arrest. I feel sad for the old because these kids look scary, are scary and are the sort of people who would not do a good deed; they would sooner rob you and kill you than help an old lady across the road. Sad.

Thanks Frank for the comments, I could not have said it better myself, what Djermano states as well further in this story are my sentiments exactly, we have certainly lost our way, when a much simpler life was so much better before Political Correctness Reared it Hemorrhoidial Liberal Colon.
at 08:24 on July 30th, 2008
Two words: Border Control. Canada needs it, the UK needs it. We can't continue with the loosy, goosey, PC big-smile, come-on-in border control we have right now. We have vicious global criminals bringing violence to the streets who can be stopped at the border. We need street checks on most-likely suspects (the police know who they are), we need break-ups on the neighbourhoods where they 'hang', and we need them being banned from living in apartments once charged. I can assure you: the police know who these people are, they know where they live, and they know what they are up to: it is just getting the political support to go after the crooks and sweep them up.

Just to let you know, I had more problem getting in Canada, then getting out. I came in through Alaska, you have to keep all of the Alaska gifts out.
at 21:13 on July 30th, 2008
Really Al, that's strange? Most likely staffed by students, like our Poker Creek and Little Gold border station up their in the Yukon/Alaska area.
at 21:10 on July 30th, 2008
Many Canadians feel the same way Frank, thanks for your comments. In fact restaurants and Bars are ready to call police at the first sign of gang activity in their establishments, including the wearing of gang clothing which is barred from most public restaurants and bars, and dance clubs.

I think gun crime is up in every city in Canada - even in the suburbs of Vancouver I can see evidence of it. It's scary really - this is not a trend I want to continue.
at 21:17 on July 30th, 2008
Thanks Amy for the comments and flag, I am afraid it is going to get worse, before it gets any better, our Asian crime gangs in Vancouver are getting even more prolific in our fine city, with no end in sight, if you read todays paper about another gangland hit. Sam Sullivan our Mayor was on the radio today, saying one of his legacies is that under his leadership Crime is way down. Certainly makes one wonder if the man fell off the wheelchair ramp one too many times to state that fallacy.

We let the Jamaicans in during the 1970's. We educated them. They got jobs. That was cool! We traveled to Jamaica. It was cool! Have their sons turned to gangs now? Where are the parents? Who's arming them now??? Toronto use to be beautiful.
at 21:39 on July 30th, 2008
Thanks Surf, certainly parents, including those who try their best with the conditions they are handed are rendered impotent when the Bling and MTV sex drugs and rock and roll lifestyle complete with showing disenfrachised youth what the RIch have, and what they do not have, including rappers who got their start in the gang and drug trade and made Rap their legit trademark, Many youth all over Canada see this and say "My Parents are fulla Crap" Crime Does Pay! And a Justice system, which repeatedly catches them and releases them with little or no punishment makes it seem that way "Crime Does Pay"!
at 05:38 on August 11th, 2008
First of all, YOU didn't "let" NOBODY in...at the time, Toronto needed care givers/nannies/nurses and sent advertisement bout "Come to Canada and get a good job", meanwhile paying people from the West Indies $100 a month for cleaning your floors and watching your bratty kids. We came educated, but like many others, our education was not valued or recognized in your racist system. In return, you travel to Jamaica, leaving your good behaviour and manners back in Canada and act like drunken spoiled Kings who believe they have the rights to the world because they spent a couple dollars. Our parents believed the lies ya'll sold em bout get an education and everything else falls in place, but it doesn't work like that in this society...us, the first generation who actually grew up in this system, seen it for what it is. & rather than break our backs @ temporary jobs (while old ass full timers make double what we make doing the same job) or earn minimum wages @ service jobs, we would rather feed your kids drugs...why? Because they keep coming back for more. & who's arming us? Well if kids are walking around with POLICE ISSUED bullet proof vest, and POLICE ISSUED guns, I'll give u a hint...and here's another reality check: kids from poor areas don't own private jets or runways or work @ ports or the boarders. They are not truckers who travel to and from the States either. So if you want to know where the guns are coming from, I say look in your own backyard rather than trying to play the role of 'the victim' all the time and ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for your role in all of this.
at 13:57 on August 11th, 2008
Thanks for your comments B Real, while some may act like spoiled Kings in your country, the Spoiled Kings do not indiscriminately start shooting up your town, dealing crack, and robbing the citizens of your country, and as for guns, well they are the consumers, and without demand for guns there would not be any to be had, as for the Ole Poor Me bit, don't blame Whitey for your failures, which always seem to be the Excuse Du Jour. Many of us came from poor or lower middle class backgrounds and made something of themselves with using an excuse for their criminal behaviour, If those who do not appreciate Canada are more then welcome to go back where you came, and good luck with that too, the Responsibility Ball is now and has always been in your Court. NEXT!!

Hasn't it been a while since Moore pointed out the wide disparity between American and Canadian gun-related murder-rates ?
Well - just a guess, but maybe things have had a chance to correct themselves over the past few years ...
I sure it would've happened anyway with or without Moore's movie ...
What's he been doing, anyway, since then ? Haven't heard much from him over the past few years ...
He's probably just hanging out, counting his money, thinking about what he'll do next ...
at 09:58 on July 30th, 2008
He is on the health care issue. Pointing out how bad healthcare is in America and how wonderful it is in other countries. What Moore forgets is our constitution is designed to be a Republic. The Federal Governemet has limitations. Healthcare probably is a state issue. There are good argu on both sides as, the words, "general welfare" in our founding documents could mean healthcare. General is the word, does general include health? So Michael is working the circut on the Healthcare issue. Here is something he doesnt point out. We have county health departments that provide care for free to those who wish to use the service. There are many hospitals that have programs for indigent and low income people, where they will provide hospital and care to those who apply for it. I wonder why he leave that out of his movie?
