That's a catalogue of supernovae (data by SDSS as far as I remember). Anyway, that is how astronomers pick supernovae - they continuously scan the sky (wide coverage) trying to notice some new bright spots within a galaxy etc. Typical supernova is as bright as the galaxy it belongs to.
