NP Rank:
Surrey Police Can't Get People to Talk
After another shooting, Surrey police are having difficulties getting witnesses to cooperate. On Friday, a man was shot in the back outside of his residence in Surrey, and over 30 neighbors watched. The suspect then fled the scene, driving a white Acura. When the police arrived, he was found in his driveway and rushes to the hospital. He is expected to survive.
Like many of the recent shootings, none of the witnesses or victims are willing to provide the police with any information. It is assumed to be gang and drug related, the reason behind many other shootings and deaths this year.
The article was posted on the Vancouver Sun website, and many people have responded with two distinct viewpoints: are the witnesses at fault for not testifying, or is it the police's clumsy handling of the gang violence?
One reader comments:
" It is not that they are not willing to talk to the police, its that some feel very worried about the repercusions if anyone finds out they talked. Can you blame people for not wanting to talk...look at the recent violence......the police cant even protect the public "
Whether or not you believe that the public is at fault for not stepping up, or if they're better off protecting their anonymity, one fact remains clear. Gang related violence is becoming more and more serious every day, and police need to deal with it more effectively.
