A Surrey supermarket was completely destroyed after it was ravaged by a huge fire. It happened at the Banstead branch of Waitrose, a supermarket owned by John Lewis. The fire broke out around 2045 GMT and was reported to have started on the roof of the supermarket. It spread through the building quickly.

Nobody was injured at the time of the fire, and neighboring residents were evacuated. Nearby roads were closed.

The police described the building as a 'total loss'. They suspect the fire was started deliberately, and are treating it as "potentially suspicious". Surry Police have sent out a request for witnesses to contact them.

A Waitrose spokesman said that the building suffered extensive damage, but the building would be rebuilt.
