They call themselves “preppers.” They want to be ready for any and all catastrophes that may knock them into being self-reliant. They are getting prepared just as their forefathers prepared for impending nuclear holocaust from attack by the former Soviet Republic. There is more to worry about today than back then, and for that reason they are getting ready.

Preppers are people who prepare for disasters. They are survivalists.
Here in the Washington DC Metro, one would expect there are many preppers because so many people are employed in the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. They are attuned to potential disasters and threats of all kinds. However, the emperor may not have any clothes. We shall see as we explore this topic.
There is a prepper organization (prepper.org) with an initiative to get organized throughout the United States.
Here is their definition.
“Prepper (noun): An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances or lifestyle without significant reliance on other persons (i.e., being self-reliant), or without substantial assistance from outside resources (govt., etc.) in order to minimize the effects of that change on theircurrent lifestyle. “http://www.prepper.org/

Imagine. People preparing to become self-reliant only IF something untoward should happen to the government. Now imagine if such preparedness was an everyday working philosophy. Imagine a world with out social victims blaming their unpreparedness on their neighbors and government. Bliss, sheer bliss.

Self-reliant. Independent. Prepared. Individual rights and freedoms. Minimal government. These are not concepts of character, or nation, one can keep on the shelf until some emergency of the collectivist social governing prompts there usefulness. They must be used, breathed, sweated, tested in everyday life and known intimately by the user. It's not a pill you take in case of an emergency and then go back to doing the same old-same old. Once you have tasted, sweated, burned self-reliance as energy. You can never go back to the herd. And most certainly not as Dorothy clicking in with your red shoes on.
