NP Rank:
Suspect Jonathan Belton,16, Surrenders in Oak Park Police Killing
Local television news is reporting that Jonathan Belton, the 16-year old suspect in a police killing in Oak Park, Michigan has turned himself in to authorities. Officer Mason Samborski was on solo patrol in Oak Park, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, when the killing occurred. The murder of Officer Mason Samborski is the first police killing in the area since Officer Henry Wolf was shot in 1973.
A 16-year-old wanted in the shooting death of an Oak Park police officer has turned himself in, police said. The suspect, 16-year-old Jonathan Belton went to a police station, the former 2nd Precinct station in Detroit shortly after 3 p.m. No information was immediately available about charges.
Jonathan Belton was pulled by Officer Mason Samborski on what is thought to be a routine traffic stop. Jonathan Belton did not have a driver's licence and it is believed that he was returning Belton to his home and the custody of an adult when he was murdered.
Residents of the Oak Park apartment complex where Belton lived reported hearing a scuffle before shots were fired. The motive for the killing is still unknown and it is unclear whether Jonathan Belton had previous run-ins with police. It has been reported, and also unconfirmed, that Officer Samborski was shot with his own weapon. Officer Mason Samborski, 28, leaves behind a wife and a 1 year-old daughter.
Police in Oak Park, Mich., say they're searching for a teenager suspected in Sunday's killing of Mason Samborski, a 28-year-old police officer. Jonathan Belton, 16, is considered armed and dangerous, Lt. Mike Pinkerton told the Detroit Free Press. Samborski was fatally shot at an apartment complex in Oak Park after a struggle with Belton in the hallway, Pinkerton said. Police did not say whether Samborski was killed with his own gun, which reportedly was not recovered at the scene, said the Free Press. Samborski, who had been with city police for four years, was married and had one child.
Officer Mason Samborsky, 28, a four-year member of the department, had made a traffic stop and was taking Belton to an address at a nearby apartment complex in connection with an investigation, the lieutenant said. Police are not yet releasing the reason for the trip to the apartment complex.
A struggle between Officer Samborsky and Belton ensued in the hallway of the apartment complex and the officer was fatally shot, Pinkerton said. Police are not saying whether Samborsky was shot with his own weapon.
However, Pinkerton said Belton is considered armed. The officer’s weapon was reportedly not recovered at the scene by officers who responded to the shooting, though Pinkerton said he could not confirm that information.
The social networking site Facebook had postings about the police killing and suspect Jonathan Belton up by mid day Sunday. A Facebook page under the name of Jonathan Belton was unreachable but related posters suggest that the 16 year old murder suspect was a student at Cody High School in Detroit.
By noon, messages were already posted on Facebook about the incident. A woman with the screen name “Victoria Belton” said she was “so hurt,I luv my bro and i hope u ok where ever u at.” A page under the name of “Jonathan Belton” could not be viewed, although there was a picture of a man matching the description of Belton making an unidentified symbol with his hands. The page lists Belton as a student at Cody High School in Detroit.
Samborski is the first Oak Park officer shot and killed in the line of duty since Henry Wolf was shot and killed during a traffic stop May 21,1973. The city has a plaque dedicated to Wolf at the city offices.

How in this world this officer was along in this dangerous job? I am very sorry for his family, this is horrendous crime act, the Judges and the court have to put it in consideration to show the people that it's not fun to take any body's life, and give a exemplar life sentence in jail.

It is tragic the officer was killed.
It is also sad that a 16 year has killed a man and will spend most of his life in prison.

It is NOT sad that a 16 year old is going to spend his life in jail! He killed an officer of the law that was here to protect us and even him. He was taking him home he wasn't even arresting the bratt! He made the bad choice and needs to pay for it I am just sad that my tax dollars will give him 3 square meals and a warm place to sleep. Sadly he will be praised in prison so life may be better for him there than on the streets where he was picked up! It wasn't like it was an accident he did it on purpose and now a little girl no longer has her daddy!

I think its funny how u kno EXACTLY what happened that night...maybe you should have testified in court against the young man. I hate that people take in all dis crap in the media and think everything is true of what is being told. (even if they were never physically there to be a witnes) Many times the media alters, exaggerate, tell only have the story so that people can make negative or positive oppinions on the situation.

Officer Samborski is a dear friend. This is a significant loss to our community. We are deeply saddened by those who are celebrating his killing and lionizing his killer. We are asking for public support in closing the community and found a petition is already in existence.

Ok the young boy is going to lose his life behind bars for what???? A crime that the police want to place on him cause they are upset???? If i knew the police were looking for me and i didnt do anything I would turn myself in to but he gets no credit for that???To all the police that just makes him look more guilty right???? BULLSHIT! They need to look into this case more. Sorry for your lost in your community but things need to change and things need to come to light and just cause the boy is black doesnt mean he killed anyone and case close. They need to get things to charge him which they have failed to do so they need to leave him alone. And I am not a family member or a friend i am just a person tired justice is never givin to the right person.

I am deeply saddened we loose two lives, one can not be restored and the other is tainted for life. As of now the story is not clear as of the cause, God knows why this has happened. I am praying for both families for closure and peace. No one should take a life and it is apparent their needs to be more resources for these troubled teens to assist them in making rational decisions, as oppose to irrational decisions. The officer who took the teen back to where??? why didn't he call for back-up, hand cuff the minor for protection whose to say what he was walking into, HELP is the key. The teen my heart goes out to you, you are innocent until proven guilty, again both are tragedies. I am troubled by such a devasting crime and sympathize because it could be my child, family member, brother, sister or friend in this situation the one who caused the scenario or the one who receives it. When things of this magnitude happen we don't know how much stress we put on our loved ones and ourselves if only for a quick snapshot we could see the impact before it happens, one might not proceed. I can say it is difficult being a parent watching your child in these trying circumstances. Also, having a senseless loss of a loved one. Help us all in these trying times. Hopefully each family receives conseling and continuous support from their families.

My prayers go out to my cousin, Jonathan. He is not a killer. He would have no reason to kill a cop or anyone on purpose. He has never been in trouble like this before. If there was a struggle and the cop was shot with his own gun, that is very tragic. I am inclined to believe that he shot himself accidentally though. I really can't see Jonathan snatching the gun from a trained officer, the chances of Samborski allowing that to happen are so slim. Jonathan had no training in fighting or self defense, he is not especially big or muscular, and he has no record of violence. I pray he won't be scapegoated for this. He had no business driving without a license but he is certainly not a killer. The media is leaning very heavily towards Jonathan's guilt, making Samborski look like a martyr. I really feel for his family, especially his little daughter, but it is not fair to pain Jonathan in such an unflattering light. I pray there will be justice in this case, although it's not looking very promising right now.

M. Belton this is not the time or the forum for you to discuss what you "think" has happened. Have respect for the family and friends of Officer Samborski during their time of loss. I'm sure the truth will come out sooner or later. How could you piece together a story without being present? Perhaps, you should pray and discuss your thoughts with your little cousin's family right now. If you have not noticed, Officer Samborski's life was loss. At the very least, you will be able to write and see your family member again. A wife, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, etc. will never be able to speak or touch their loved one again. Please show more respect, a life was loss, a life was taken!

With all due respect to the loss of an officer, falsely accusing a young man and taking his life away is more than a tragedy... a young man with talents, dreams, and an education....Plans to go to college...that's a tragedy and the people who continue to slander this young man's name should be ASHAMED. Many officers have passed in the line of duty and many have lost their lives off duty, but that is the job we sign up for...its comes with the territory. I am not saying forget about the victim, I am simply saying do not subject another person to be a victim to the crime. Without evidence to prove it was Jonathan Belton, we have nothing, but raw assumptions which make an ass out of all of us if we are in fact wrong. All I have to say is...if Mr. Belton at any point fired a weapon....where is the gun powder resin on his clothing??? Where are there any hints that a young man who turned himself in to the police for illegedly murdered a peace officer? You find me those answers and then you can start toting names around like a Louis Vuitton bag.

C. Vincent, I'm assuming you are a family member of the suspect because you indicate that the young man had talents, dreams and an education. Being a previous teacher of the suspect, I admit that the he had potential; however, parental neglect is what placed this young man in the trouble that he landed in. I will not go into detail because this would only add fuel to fire. If you are a family member, you and I both know that Ms. Belton had a difficult time raising her children. Although I can't speak of the details that went on in this case, I do have a few questions that are directly linked to parental neglect. What was Jonathan doing out after curfew? If Jonathan lives on the west side of Detroit, what was he doing in Oak Park? Where was Jonathan's mother, father? Whose vehicle did Jonathan have? Why was he driving without a license (any talented and educated kid would know this is against the law)? Why was Jonathan attending adult education? Why was Jonathan on probation? Why was Jonathan and some of his sisters shipped back and forth out of state to be cared for by other relatives instead of being cared for by the parents who birthed them? Don't paint a false picture to me because I know the "real deal." I'm sure the truth will come out sooner or later. As a community, we need to stop covering up for the wrong decisions that people make just because they're our color, family or friends. Wrong is Wrong.

Do you even have a heart? After all of that yelling , fussing, and cursing, you have proved to be one of the members of society whose opinion doesn't hold any weight in this conversation. This is not a contest, so why are you picking sides? It's simple, a cop was murdered and a young man may be facing life in prison. You talk about cops picking on black kids, but in this case, this officer was trying to give this black kid a break, and he unfortunately was killed for his efforts. We have to stop making everything out to be a "he was messing with him type situation" and be truthful about the reality of this mess; hence, the kids are paying the price for their parents' negligence. People like you don't make matters better because you smile at the very sight of vengeance and retaliation. Do you actually think a good officer's life will pay the price for the racist cops that harass black kids? No, it does not. It makes matters worst. How could you classify cops in one group, as if they all act the same. That would be like someone saying that your intellectual capabilities and mine are the same; and your writing has proved that to be untrue. The next time one of the kids will end up in jail or dead. And for your information, you don't know a damn thing about my relationship with this student, or how I've tried to help. The information I stated earlier has nothing to do with being nosy, but more to do with actions that were displayed in the public eye. However, with negligent parents and ignorant people like you in the world, it doesn't make a difference what I do because you are part of the problem, not the solution. But what I will suggest is that you take your uneducated behind somewhere and take a basic writing class because your grammar is dreadful. Even if you wanted to make a point, it doesn't matter because most people would have a hard time understanding what you are trying to convey.

To Get Real, We are working with a case that has little evidence to back the charges. You were not there so you should be quiet! You don't know both sides of the story. Answer these questions when in the hell do cops become so friendly that they take a young black man with a record, home to there Mother? Why did the officer violate his work rules and choose who he allows to let go, after they are quilty of DWL? I am sure you are one of those hipocrit ass so called Christians that only see things through your dumb ass eyes. Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house. One of your family members told me you were writing on this blog. I remember when your Mother use to use you as drug bait. You were your Mothers' idea money maker. You have had more intercourse with drug dealers to help pay your parents habits. I don't know the accused suspect....but I do know you

Were you mad? If your dumb ass don't know, you say you are a teacher right? When typing informal text messages and e-mails we have a thing called shorthand typing. You seem to be quite immature so I wrote in the style that fit your personality. That is the problem you judge me by something so little. The same way you judged that young man. It is not a race card. You are just one of those people they use as a snitch, with little or no information to go on. Quit discussing the case with your co-workers over a 40oz and crackers, because a mine is terrible thing to waste. That should be one of your lesson plans. I see you are wasting your time arguing about other peoples business. I am a Law Student. You can't see past your long nose thats why you are so judgemental. I am very proficient in my writing skills, and even more proficient in putting people in there place

You may be a law student and you may be proficient in writing but I would ask you to ckeck the meaning of the word mine. I am guessing you meant to use the word mind because that would make sense in the context you used it in. I would also ask you to refresh your writing skills where apostrophes should be used. BTW I am not college educated but I picked those errors up right away even when you chose to use actual words to express yourself.

An assessment of the "Law School" student's writing skills!
1) "If your dumb ass don't know, you say you are a teacher right?" Sentence Fragment (look it up)
2) Note: Informal language is used in informal situations, not on a public forum (look it up)
3) "We have a thing called..." --Who is we, and what is the thing?
4)"You seem to be quite immature so I wrote in the style that fit your personality." You must use a comma before a coordinating conjunction when joining two independent clauses. (Look it up)
5)"The same way you judged that young man." Incomplete sentence. (figure out why.)
6) "It is not a race card." Figurative language should not be used when speaking with a imprecise audience. (look it up
7) "You are just one of those people they use as a snitch, with little or no information to go on." This makes sense in the hood, but not on an educated level.
8) "Quit discussing the case with your co-workers over a 40oz and crackers, because a mine is terrible thing to waste." Improper use of the comma.
9) "I see you are wasting your time arguing about other peoples business." People is possessive in this instance; therefore, an apostrophe is needed.
10) "You can't see past your long nose thats why you are so judgemental." It is spelled pass instead of past, and judgmental is spelled wrong.
11) "I am very proficient in my writing skills, and even more proficient in putting people in there place" There is a comma splice presents. It should be spelled their instead of there. You forgot to end the sentence with punctuation.
Baby, you only long to be in law school. Fix these errors, then we can talk about who is putting who in their place. How you be in law school without understanding professionalism? Your first day in court, the judge would put you out because of your vulgar language and inability to speak standard English. You talk it; I walk it! Based on the errors I identified in your writing, I still suggest that you get a tutor. Your writing skills are equivalent to an eight grader. Stop throwing your hopes and aspirations around as if they are believable. Come again!

Good Night Kid! Let's squash the beef and work it out in a tutoring session instead. I would love to help you pass the LSAT, or at the least, help prepare you for your Basic Writing Class.

I'm very sadden by the whole thing. A father and husband has died. And a child stands accused. Two families have been destroyed. We need to just stop and pray for both families. Yelling and talking down on one and praising the other does not help either one. Take a moment to pray.

i agree with cj i am thinking this boy had nothing to do with it. he is yound and probley not been out past cerfew but who didnt do that when they were kids????? They have no kind of clues and this boy has no gun powered on him or anything. I feel the police are upset like they have every reason to be one of there own was killed. But they have no right to take a young man to jail for life based on their feelings. The cop was WHITE the boy was BLACK you do the math. His side will be told but NOT HEARD. Its wrong but thats they way the cookie crumbles.
at 20:51 on January 4th, 2009
How can we call the boy a muderer or the officer a hero when no person knows the whole story????
