Sweden has released a statement saying it will call back its affairs from Colombo, after being snubbed by the Sri Lankan government to negotiate a ceasefire to end the violence.

The LTTE rebels have declared a unilateral ceasefire to comply with IC calls for a ceasefire.

Swedish foreign minister denied entry to Sri Lanka

STOCKHOLM — Sweden's foreign minister said Tuesday he had been denied entry to Sri Lanka as part of a European delegation pressing for a cease-fire between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels.

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt had been scheduled to visit this week along British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French counterpart Bernard Kouchner. They got permission to enter but he did not, Bildt said.

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said there was no reason given for the denied entry permit from the Sri Lankan governmen.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry said Bildt was welcome to visit the country in May "at a mutually convenient time." It did not elaborate on why Bildt could not visit now.

Bildt expressed his shock towards the behaviour of the Sri Lankan government.

"This is remarkable," he told The Associated Press by phone from Luxembourg. "You just don't act this way."

After the rebuke to its Foreign Minister, the Swedish government has decided to recall its ambassdor from Sri Lanka.

The Foreign Ministry in Stockholm said it would recall Sweden's charge d'affaires from Colombo for consultations because of the snub.

Stockholm, 28 Apr. - A diplomatic crisis between Sri Lanka and Sweden: the government of Colombo has denied a visa for the Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, who was scheduled to visit the Asian country tomorrow together with his French and British counterparts, Bernard Kouchner and David Miliband.

Sweden has recalled its ambassador to Sri Lanka as retaliation, reported Bildt from Luxemburg. The minister denounced ''the very strange conduct'' of the Colombo government. Kouchner and Miliband did get a visa and will go anyway.

The goal of the European mission is to reach a cease-fire in the north-east, where the final attack on the Tamil Tigers is in progress. The Tamil rebels have again accused the armed forces of Sri Lanka of pounding their positions, despite the promise to suspense the offensive with heavy weapons. The troops have denied the shelling, but admitted to new attacks to free the 50,000 civilians who are trapped in the battle zone. According to Colombo they are used as ''human shield'' by the rebels.

Sri Lankan Governmet rejects accusation on denial of entry to Swedish FM.

This is another lie by LTTEs to divert the GoSL's attention from LTTE terrorist hunting.

GoSL has issued a clarification on the event that led to Wednesday's (28th) diplomatic tug-o-war between Sri Lanka and Sweeden.

The salient points are:

  • The Government of Sri Lanka is being wrongly accused of preventing the visit of the Swedish Foreign Minister.
  • No formal application received for a visa by the Sri Lanka Embassy on behalf of the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, therefore a denial is out of question.
  • There was no indication of the participation of the Swedish Foreign Minister during the planning stage of the visits of the French and the British Foreign Ministers.
  • No formal prior consultations with the government of Sri Lanka with regard to the visit of the Swedish Foreign Minister.
  • Sweden would anyway be represented in an EU-TROIKA visit scheduled to take place from 12 – 13 May.
  • An invitation had been extended to the Swedish Foreign Minister to visit Sri Lanka in early May.

Hi Abdeen,

I do not think that this diplomats wants to safeguard Pirphaharan or ltte, But civilians trapped or kept as hostages!

They are diplomats and try to act as such (Diplomats) and do not want to be blamed that they are doing nothing.

Most Tamil diasporas are furious and can not bare any more that they are loosing the whole investment what they did to Promot ltte and the terrorism. And these diplomat wants to keep the civil envirment calm in own countries.

Hi Sathyajith, I cannot under stand why these diplomats caring about the civilians now and where were at the blast in a commuter train and passenger buses killing the same civilians is that because of they are not Tamils.Where were these Diplomats when prapakaran eject the muslims within 12 hours by force.Dont you feel this all just playing games.

Hi Abdeen,

is that because of they are not Tamils

No I do not think so. :-)

There are by about 80 - 100 mil. Tamils world wide and by about 50 Mill. are living in Tamil Nadu. (May be also 60 Mil. in Tamil Nadu) The rest is spread through out the world. (Tamils are every where and they have got no where)

Back to the theme, there is a big Tamil lobby and they are doing the job very well.

And the behavior of some Tamils disturbing the western countries now so they want to show a action. (By the way it is very cold here in europ now a days :-))

a few reasons I can think of:
1. These politicos depends on Tamils votes to get elected.
2. They have received lavish "gifts" so that it's their turn to payback.
3. They want to meddle with our internal affairs. If the war ends it becomes harder.

LTTE leader Pirabakaran was born in 1954. Sinhala chauvinism had started their atrocities in 1956. Who else to blame? Genocide is portrayed as Human rights violations. North-East is the Homeland of Tamils and they are the Native Nation of the land. Poor sinhala villagers can not understand the gimmicks of the sinhala policians. Do you know why, Mahinda does not want to stop the war against Tamils? I f he stops, then the poor parents of armed forces will go to the army camps to see their children. He can't say that 150,000 men missing in action or ran away from battle field. People can believe 40,000 , but can't accept 150,000.

So he desperately needs a overall victory, then he will claim that 150000 men lost their lives in the battle against tamils.  We can live together Machaan. But politicians do not like .
