The Associated Press is reporting that Syrian President Bashar Assad stated on December 22 that direct Israeli-Syrian peace talks are possible and will likely take place at some point.

During a press briefing with the visiting Croatian president, Assad said that Israel and Syria are currently building the foundation for peace through informal talks that have taken place this year, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

The talks, mediated by Turkey, have been on hold since Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert decided to step down.  Israeli elections are slated for February 10, 2009.
