Unique Fundraiser Gives Meaning to Music
Gary over at Blog TO invites readers to a unique fundraising event this Valentine’s day. If you’re “not into the commercialism of Valentine's Day but love to hit the town for a good cause” come to the online fundraising group GiveMeaning’s MusicGivesMeaning at The Cameron House tomorrow (Feb 14). MusicGivesMeaning is an “innovative benefit concert” where your admission is “given back to you in the form of a GiveMeaning “giftcard” with a unique pin number.” For the show, each performer “has selected a specific charity they're playing for,” which they talk about during their set. “After the show, you choose which charity you donate to over at the GiveMeaning website.”
Gary writes that there are two shows scheduled, an early and a late show, and both star Craig Cardiff. “Opening the late show are mysterious rootsy folksters The Phonogarde.” And interview with Christian from Phonogarde is in the post. Tomorrow night, Phonogarde will be playing for the charity Growing Up Organic Canada. Tickets to the event are available on TicketWeb.
Raptors’ Coach Takes Bereavement Leave of Absence
Raptors Den’s Michael Montgomery gives us some Raptors “news and notes” in his latest post. As many already know, “Coach Sam Mitchell took a leave of absence from the Toronto Raptors starting Monday,” needing to spend time with his family due to the death of his father-in-law. He will return for the Raptors’ “first game following the All-Star Break on February 23 against the Orlando Magic.” Assistant Coach Mike Evans has taken over the head coach role, while Jay Triano “will fill the assistant coach position in Wednesday’s game against the Nets.” Interestingly, Triano will become “the first Canadian-born coach in the history of the NBA.”
Also in the news, Jason Kapono was invited to the All-Stars for the Three-Point Shootout, making him the fourth Toronto player to participate in the festivities. “He will join Chris Bosh (All-Star Reserve), Andrea Bargnani (Rookie Challenge), and Jamario Moon (Rookie Challenge and Slam Dunk Contest).” The final game before the All-Star break takes place tonight (Wednesday, Feb 13) against the New Jersey Nets at the Air Canada Centre. “It’s only the second meeting between the division rivals this season… Their only other meeting of the season came in the Raptors 106-69 beatdown of the Nets in East Rutherford in the second game of the season.” They won’t face each other again until April 11.
Trade in Your Dead Bras for a Good Cause!
Roxanne Bielskis of The Torontoist invites you to bring out your dead… bras that is. Today is Dead Bra Day, and it’s your chance to come on out to Secrets From Your Sister on Bloor and “save 20% on all of the boutique's fabulous, well-fitting and long-lasting bras by trading in a “dead” bra for a wicked discount.” All the dead bras, “languishing in your drawer since you gained weight/lost weight/had a baby/went through puberty,” will be donated to the Women's Own Detox Centre Fund, “which helps women recovering from drug addiction.”
The deal is only happening today, Bielskis states in her post, but to make sure “as many women as possible can participate in this event, Secrets From Your Sister has extended their regular store hours” and will stay open until 9:00 pm. The doors, however, will close at 8 pm in order to manage changeroom traffic. All bras must be washed before they are traded in.
