Twenty young boys were rescued from a secret indoctrination camp in Pakistan. They were among hundreds recruited by the Taliban to become trained suicide bombers. Some of the boys are as young as nine years old.

The rescued youths spoke about the details of how they were trained to become part of the Taliban jihad army. According to their accounts, more than a thousand children may be in training in the Swat Valley in northern Pakistan. Many of the children were rescued by the army in a national `search and sweep` operation, while others were exposed to the army by worried parents, according to The Independent.

The boys arrived at the camp by a variety of different routes. Some families had been forced at gunpoint to hand over their children "to fight jihad" during the Taliban's brutal advance across Swat over the last two years. Some groups of young boys were kidnapped in mysterious circumstances, while others were lured in to the Taliban's clutches by the persuasion of their friends.

Poverty seems to be a driving force in the  expansion of the Taliban army:

Hazrat Ali, a 14-year-old boy from a poor farming family in Swat was recruited to the Taliban from the local Islamic school. In a country where the average family size is seven people and the daily wage is as low as £1 a day, many families choose to send their children to Islamic religious schools, where they are given free food and shelter. Now increasingly, the Taliban are recruiting from these schools and paying the families a monthly stipend in return.

The boys are deeply indoctrination to hate Western countries and the Pakistan army for siding with them. They are taught that these parties are the enemies of Islam, and the fight against them is just. They were even told that it would be right to kill their parents if they tried to thwart the boys in their mission.

The Taliban divides its army into grades: the street-smart boys are trained as informers, the more athletic among them are trained as Taliban fighters, while the less intelligent and easily manipulated are chosen to join the ranks of Taliban suicide bombers.

The army has appealed to parents across the valley to hand over sons who spent time in the Taliban's camps. A special school is being established in Swat to rehabilitate the children, to re-educate and counsel them, and give them small grants to be able to seek jobs once they have recovered.
