GHALLANAI: Taliban militants of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan hijacked 13 containers carrying supplies for NATO forces from the Torkham-Peshawar Highway linking Pakistan with Afghanistan from the nearby Jamrud Fort in Khyber Agency.
Sources told that the containers were ambushed by dozens of heavily armed men from Wazir Dhand, Teddi Bazaar and Sur Kamar areas of the Jamrud tehsil where several Khasadar checkpoints are located nearby.
They said Taliban seized the containers on the road and emptied them “in clear view of paramilitary personnel” deployed at Jamrud Fort, but they did not take any action.
A tehsildar of the political administration told media that 12 of the trucks were loaded with wheat and other edibles while one of them was carrying US Humvee military jeeps in it. However, he did not tell about the 26 persons who were still missing after the trucks were hijacked. Just after this incident, Political Administration deployed Khasadar and Paramilitary forces at different points and contacted local elders to help in searching the hijacked vehicles. It is worth mentioning that Torkham-Peshawar highway is the most important route of transit between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is also used for logistic support of NATO forces in Afghanistan. Pakistani diplomat for Afghanistan, Tariq Azizudin have also been kidnapped from the same area a few months before.
