While President  Zardari extending a begging bowl to every western countrie's head to "fight terrorism", back in home taliban leaders maybe wondering at their luck. They need ask anyone for money. They are the proud owner of emerald mines now.

Only thing left for Taliban is to take over the nuclear facilities of Pakistan. Let us see when that will happen.

TALIBAN in Swat have taken over emerald mines in the area and are operating the business. The mines produce emeralds of international quality and had been under the control of the Pakistani government in the past.

Taking advantage of the recent ceasefire between militants and the government in the region, the Taliban have taken over these mines.

The mines in the Pak-Afghan border region are said to hold the largest known deposits of emeralds in sub-continent of South Asia.

A senior Taliban commander told the BBC that ‘it is for the benefit of the public that we have reopened the mines.’ The commander added that the mines were open for anyone to work in provided they follow the rules laid down by the Taliban.

The emerald mines of Swat are located in the mountains that surround the main town of Mingora and cover an area of nearly 8 kilometers.

Now if it was oil you were talking about, that wouldn't be tolerated by the west!

I would hate to be wearing a Taliban Emerald.

What if taliban themselves wear the emerald....!!

Seriously, west can't do much about the situation. The need of the hour is  support from even east (India) and north  (Russia) also. Especially since Russia is no more a red devil in the western eyes. Not only the military solution, but much more beyond that.

Till  such cooperation materializes , I am afraid that you have no other option but to  wear the taliban emerald...!

Doubt the the west doesn't care too much about those mines, as long as they have the poppy fields and can prevent/"control" one of the worlds largest heroin producers.

Seems like things are hotting up in the area - more troops to Afganistan and sounds like an offensive on Pakistani soil might be on the cards soon, talk about Pakistan not being able to take care of itself, etc.. and india would certainly be happy with that.

There's always Columbian emeralds.

What happened to my comments lol :(
It is gone and I have to write again.. First thing to point out though.. Zardari is the president and it is yousaf Gilani the prime minister but we all know it is Zardari who is calling the shots or trying to.
I will try to repeat what I said earlier .. I agree to your comments. That Zardari is pathetically begging for money to fight terrorism.. If it is his war then why is he demanding money and favours?  By the way talking about dollars a big portion of this money will find its way to Swiss accounts as usual and rest will be wasted on committees and other lavishness  and only a small portion will find its way to training and equipping the security forces. This is how the third word corrupt countries work.
Now I wonder, it was same PPP government who used to criticise in Unison with the west when Musharaff signed the peace deals in the beginning when the militancy was in its infancy compared to its present scale. At that point PPP tirelessly sold it self to west saying that they will crush the Taliban and will welcome the NATO operations within Pakistan. But now the same government has literally given away the whole Swat valley to Taliban who might turn back tomorrow asking for more areas.
Re emeralds and other precious stones first it was drugs and Saudi oil money funding Taliban now it’s the stones. Are they affected by the recession? I don’t think so.
I guess at this point you might agree that the democratic change after Musharaf has been a huge disappointment because the politicians fail to learn from the past there is same selfish and irresponsible politics of confrontation and political scoring at the cost of the country. Sadly US had to use Pakistan Army to twist the arms of both PPP and Nawaz league to reach reconciliation and pull the country out of uncertainty. The
kind of attitude Pakistani politicians are displaying it hardly resembles any responsible governance let alone democracy and West might have to request the help of Pakistan Army which remains the only functioning institution in Pakistan. Its only time when Pak Army might step in again ,once given the nod by US, if PPP continues to consolidate its own political power with total disregard to growing militant threat.
Only time will tell where it will all go.  Presently the odds are against a sensible and responsible democratic government.

Amazing, a man who even does not know the name of the chief executive of the neighbouring country and whose country is involved in terrorism in Pakistan is spitting venom against Pakistan and worrying about the country's nuclear weapons. And he is ignoring the fact that the serving commissioned officers of the Indian army have been found involved in terrorism so he might spare  some moments to also think about the Indian nukes that are at grave risk of being stolen and handed over to the Hindu terrorists by any Colonel Prohet.

OH , I have corrected that error. My thoughts skipped when it sank in that what  a nuclear capable taliban can do to the world. Sorry about that - about the error in article.

As for the Indian army colonel, Indian judicial system is dealing with him and his fellows - unlike the "Chief Executive"  of  Pakistan who handed over a major part of his country to the same terrorists who may have killed his beloved wife and caused the death of many of  the soldiers and citizen of his own army and country respectively.

If this is how a "Chief Executive" deal with the enemies of his own country ( Who goes to beg all to all other nations for money so that he can "fight" them)  , only thing I can do is to repeat your opening shot.

Amazing....!

Past  =====>Taliban,

Present ====> Emerald Taliban

Future ===> Nuclear Taliban. (Here I am being insanely optimistic to use the word future)

Have a nice day...!

the thing is.. US and other NATO forces have miserably failed in Afghanistan and are reduced to within few hundred meters of their bases. check out the links below, the Ultimate might of NATO v fanatic talibans

losing ground to taliban

"We're Losing Ground" in Afghanistan Says Top NATO Commander

admiting failure

British troops are facing "operational failure" in Afghanistan due to years of chronic Government under-funding, according to former heads of the armed forces.

in the link below the NATO official is saying that there is no military solution, hiting at the dialog, yet Pakistan is criticised when it does the same for the sake of People in the war affected areas.

Nato 'can't allow Afghan failure'

French and US forces in Afghanistan The US is seeking to boost international forces in Afghanistan

Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has said that failure in Afghanistan is "not an option" but he ruled out a military solution alone.

Note, in all these links the people commenting have actual war experience in Afghanistan and are not singing the usual corus of "Pakistan not doing enough" even if they did. I would say what have you achieved so far and if they point to "safe heavens in Pakistan" then my question is..

1. are you sending UAVs for a joy ride?

2. what are your soliders and airforce doing when the taliban cross the border and come back in Afghanistan?

it is very easy to mock and blame a smaller and weaker country, left to fight a war which it didnt start and which was not its war but has become its own war. it has already lost many civilian and military personal, doctors , teachers and politicians and so many women.

while the taliban continue to tease NATO and Pakistan forces the media and war pundits and news Anchors continue to blame Pakistan.. yes its strategy has failed its military has been ineffective, what have you done so far?

Thank you for commenting, Amaad.

Sorry, I have made an error while writing this story. I have corrected it and the error was visible for 7 hours. Not more.Otherwise also it was not a life threatening error.

But what about the error made by the Pakistan chief and otherwise " Executive" ? Giving a religious terrorist organization - that made up of human looking beings made out of pure hatred at everything different from them  - a country of their own. Will they ever be able to correct the error they made?

Agreed that the taliban "students" belong to generation of refugee children grown up in refugee camps for Afghans who fled from Soviet Occupation. But they grew up to adults feasting on the religious venom fed by the Saudis. They know no other language or skills but only those of hate and terror.

Now another generation of Pakistani children in the Swat valley will grow up under the taliban "rule". More ruthless, more violent, more hate-filled and more fanatic.

Nuclear Taliban......!

Dear Hussain, will anybody in Pakistan "Executive" be able to correct this error ever....??

Hi Agent, your error was not life threatening.. hehe... I agree with you and find you the most informed and balanced reporter re South Asian region. I know you take some shots at Pakistani handling of Talibans if it makes you happy then what can I say..
the blame of terror generation is a shared one in my opinion we (US, Pakistan and Saudia) created a monster for cold war against Russians then Gen Zia used the same for consolidating his political power against PPP and Iranian influence in Pakistan. Pakistan had to take the brunt because it was the base for all the international and home grown fighters who stayed in Pakistan even after Zia was vaporised in the air, Russia broken and Communist Afghanistan defeated. Like you so correctly noted, these fcukers didn’t do anything but fight so they were turned into killers of their own people when Saudis found another use for them to fight a proxy war against Iran and spread its strict faith of wahabisim in Pakistan through money and power. The result of unlimited funds translated into weapons, propaganda and manpower which remained unopposed till the US invasion of Afghanistan.
There are two choices..
1. Continue to blame Pakistan for being the birth place of Taliban and refuse to take the responsibility of military failures in Afghanistan. And let Taliban use this divide and mistrust and turn Pakistan into Afghanistan.
2. Understand the complexity of the situation and replace blaming with more cooperation and agreement in tackling the problem, military or political.
When you read the reports of increase in poppy and other drugs growth in Afghanistan don’t you wonder whey the US forces not destroy those factories instead of continuously attacking Afghan public gathering of grief or joy?

I respect your opinion Agent, and I do believe that Zardari is nothing more than a beggar - and I'm almost convinced the money he gets from the west isn't going to be used in the right place.

As for the Taliban taking control, it is indeed a terrible news, and the common man in a rather sensible part of Pakistan (Sindh, Punjab and Baluchistan) does not like what is happening there.

For the nuclear weapons, one must keep in mind that those are controlled with extreme caution and security. The Kahota Research Labs and other nuclear facilities are under a powerful shield that is operated by no politician but by Pakistan's military - which is I assure you damn good at protecting the nuclear facilities and weapons from even the biggest threats.

Let me also remind you that, if Pakistan military wants, it can easily teach these Talibans a lesson but the military under government's orders is following the plan of least possible Collateral damage. These Talibans are not the majority and they do not have the support of the majority of the public in Swat - they are destroying schools and setting their stupid rules which they call Sharia'h. It's like a war within Pakistan in the Northern/Tribal Areas between Pakistan and the extremists. Of course, if I were the president, I would request all peace loving people to move out of the way to we could teach those Talibans a lesson.

There is also another interesting opinion that Zardari is a puppet of the US and this Taliban movement is backed by the US and they want to create a pretext to convince the world that Pakistan should not have the nukes because the Taliban are talking over Pakistan and they would get control of the nukes. After all, you can visit http://www.ae911truth.org and see and get convinced yourself how the US created pretext for occupation of various resources of the world. The reason the US wants Pakistan to be a nukes-less state is because Pakistan, according to Israel, poses direct threat to Israel. Since we all know how much the US is controlled by Israel, there's no surprise that US is doing all that is happening. You're an Israeli Agent, you should know ;)

So again, if people are sitting in their bedrooms and imagining the rest of Pakistan to be just like those tribal areas, please wake up. The nuclear facilities and weapons of Pakistan are in absolute safe hands - the Pakistan military and Taliban is no more than an ant's fart in front of the mighty Pakistan military to cause any trouble or even think of gaining control of the nukes.

good patriotic words my friend.. there should be more people like you out there. there is a lot of international foul play in the troubles in Pakistan.. everyone knows that a lot of intelligence agencies are involved in creating situations that only help creating more havoc and fear. as a matter of fact the international policies are not made on morality.. they just serve the interests of the goverments involved. and in many cases there is a lot of double or tripple game being played.

re nuclear assets, US has been fully briefed about them  and is satisified that they are  protected otherwise we would have lost them by now.. covertly or overtly..

O' Bhai.....

Do you know what every one hear through your words? The words of Pakistan. Your words echoes the real feeling of the ordinary Pakistani people who just want to have a peaceful life - like the mega majority of people in this world.

By large military Generals are not so good rulers for the civilians. The purpose of militaries is to fight wars - for whatever reason - and to win. They life of a soldier is full with difficulties and hardship. Civilians need easy and peaceful life. On a Sunday (or a Friday) a civilian would like to sleep till morning 10 O clock, have to spend some time with his family and friends or just to relax. But soldiers can't afford to have such luxuries. They belong to a different culture and a different world itself. That is why under the military governments the life of civilians becomes next to impossible. You, being a Pakistani, do not need any examples to understand this.

In my opinion, what happens when a military takes control of a country and establishes a government is nothing but a clash of civilizations - well, in a broader sense. Unfortunately since they are more trained to win in any clash, military always win and the civilians always lose.

Unlike the military, talibans are not trained to win, but they are made to kill. Against military the civilians have a slight chance of getting their life back. Against taliban.....

I did not have any idea how the nukes are protected. Hell, I can't say the difference between a combat knife and a kitchen knife even. The only gun I ever handled was a water gun with which we play the festival Holi. It is a great relief to know that the nukes are secure and out of the reach of taliban. I can imagine that they are protected with enormous electronic and otherwise security measure and with codes only two or three high level people have access to - thanks to Hollywood action movies... :-)

If at all taliban gets to the nukes, they can't enter the code because they are all illiterate brainless zombies. I pray to god that the codes are not in Arabic  :-).

As for me being an Israeli Agent.... Have you ever heard about avatars? This is just an avatar.
