Tamil group to fight blacklisting by Canada
Update | June 19, 2008 - The World Tamil Movement said today that it would go to court to fight its the Canada's decision to blacklist it as a terrorist group.
Previously | June 17, 2008 - The Tamil Tigers are the newest addition to Canada's terrorist list.
The Tamil Tigers, a rebel group fighting for an independent state in Sri Lanka, has been added to Canada's official list of terrorist organizations. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were included on the list kept by the Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness effective on Friday, according to a statement released Monday by Minister Stockwell Day.
"The decision to list the LTTE is long overdue and something the previous government did not take seriously enough to act upon," said Day.
The United Nations already lists the group as a terrorist organization and Canada is a signatory to the resolution that made that designation.
The Tigers have been fighting for an independent Tamil state on the island of Sri Lanka since the 1980s. More than 60,000 people have died in their struggle with the Sinhalese government.
The LTTE has used suicide bombers and child soldiers in the conflict, leading Western countries, including the United States and Britain, to label them as terrorists.
But the decision has sparked controversy in Canada’s Tamil community.
Many in Canada's Tamil community are angry with Ottawa's move to label one of its organizations a terrorist group.
Stockwell Day, the minister of public safety, says the World Tamil Movement, which collected money that ended up in the hands of the Tamil Tigers, is now on a list of terrorist groups.
The group, which also had its assets frozen, is designated for helping terrorist activity and for acting on behalf of the terrorist group.
David Poopalapillai from the Canadian Tamil Congress, which is not affiliated with WTM, says the the government was punishing an entire organization instead of a few individuals.
He says if someone in the WTM broke the law they should be punished, but not the entire organization.
The organization has been known for canvassing Tamil populations demanding donations, sometimes by using aggressive intimidation tactics to get the money.

I have alot of respect for the current Conservative government however I beg to differ with Stockwell Day blacklisting the LTTE as a terrorist organization. Mr Day is a great politician and mind you he was a former Reform party candidate? But does Mr. Day really know what is going on Sri Lanka has he ever visited the country to see the political dichotomy of that nation. The answer is a big NO. He claims the LTTE is a terrorist organization however they are freedom fighters. The state of Sri Lanka right know is horrendous. In the case of the Tsunami there were several Tamil regions hit, infrastructure destroyed, medicare disabled, access to resources denied why because the Sri Lankan government denied these resources to the tamils living there. Did you know that Mr Day I don't think so? I am a proud Sri lankan tamil i have lived in this great nation (Canada) for 30 years of my life. I believe in democracy but democracy is not happening in my nation (Sri Lanka) but what is more prevalent is ethnic genocide, raping of women, oppression, starvation. This is okay for you right Mr Day? I donot believe in violence but what if you have tried all means to achieve democracy (Oslo Peace Process) what next? I would like to ask you that question since you are so politically inclined? Mr Day you might be a smart politician but you have no clue what is going on Sri Lanka?
